Can i swap motors?

Can i swap motors?
If i have the 3.0litre V6 is it hard to swap in the 3.5Litre V6? Me thinks me would be travelling much faster with the quad cam goodness and the extra halfa litre of displacement.
"If it ain't broken, smash it harder, then make it stronger!"
No I don't think it will the bellhousing is much larger on the 3.5 V6.
You would need a 3.5 V6 5sp to go with it I think or at least the bellhousing. I think the engine mounts are the same but you will need the ECU and wiring harness.
You will be going heaps faster but then you will be breaking axles at a very disturbing rate as the 3.5 axles are 5mm thicker.
A better bet may be the 3.0 V6 24 valve out of a Challenger or late model Triton ??

Frank have you actually compared the two bellhousings????
I talked to RPW and told them I wanted to buy a bunch of 3.0 stuff. They told me "why bother the 3.5 will bolt in and cost the same, and give more power". I could be totally wrong of course, but they wanted to turn down buisness in favor of a swap that they thing is possible, and they said done in the past.
I never checked so I dont know.
As far as the axle shaft issue... i dunno... the 3.0 shaft are still beefy compared to other manufacturors standards... (dana 35's, dana 30's, and dana 44's)

Yes I have eyeballed the 3.5 V6 gearboxes (auto & manual) and the t/case.
They are quite larger than the 3.0 V6, no wonder they did a body lift for the 3.5 V6 the bellhousing is a lot bigger.
A 3.0 would need a body lift to fit the auto definitely the 5sp you might get away with. The t/case is quite a bit larger to but I think would fit.
As for the axles remember the 3.0 V6 shares the same axle size as the 4 cylinder just a fatter bearing being used. You don't hear of any 3.5 axle breakages but a few for the 3.0. I think they would be working real hard with a 3.5 V6, locker and 33"+ tyres. Dana 44's and Toyo axles are stronger than the 3.0 V6 axles but the 9" Mitsu diff is larger than both. The 3.5 V6 (10" diff and 35.5mm axles) is getting into Dana 60 category and I never heard of one being broken yet (axle or diff) except for a factory defect in one (repaired under warranty).

That cant be... the 3.5 and the 97-98 3.0 share the same transmision. And they have never change the block on the later 3.0's.
So the tranny may be bigger... but where it bolts to the block must be the same.
I dont think the bellhousings on these trannys are removable like some make and models.
Just some food for thought.

Yes when we were scouring Mitsi wreckers to measure an auto tranny output shaft diameter (for the 2.85 gears) we saw a pallet of 3.5 V6 auto & manuals with the t/cases. It was next to the pallet with the 3.0 stuff we were measuring.
I didn't measure anything but saw enough to say the 3.5 stuff is way bigger especially the bellhousing, the auto looked the same size but slightly different. The t/case was also larger but not hugely so, I wish I paid more attention now as it was all laid out on the floor.
The later model 3.0 & 3.5 may have shared the same auto's but they could have had 2 different sized bellhousings to fit each block.
It would take some serious detective work though to clarify all this or a friendly wrecker who will let you come in and measure/compare stuff.

Hope you don't mind me opening an old thread.
I was speaking to a Jap Importer yesterday about getting a genuine canvas soft top imported, anyway during the conversation I asked about the price of a V25C half cut (about 1998, 3.5litre twin cam with auto), he suggested he could deliver one for about $2000-3000. Though I am not seriously contemplating this-yet- would the engine mounts, drive shafts etc line up with my V23C? To me this seems like a pretty good price with tranny included, what are your thoughts?

Yes it will bolt straight in to your shortie, may have to shift a few bits and pieces around in the engine bay. Probably will need the 3.5 engine mounts which will still bolt to your chassis brackets.
You will definitely need a 3.5 t/case though to bolt up to the auto your 3.0 one won't fit. Also you will probably need the front and rear propshafts as they will be different lengths.
Thats a great price for a half cut, go on do it

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
thats really cheap for a full front cut. if if you were gunna do it properly though you would be getting an evo front cut then you get the twin turbo v6, sequential auto gear box, long travel front suspension and a mad looking bonnet, just to mention a few goodies. With regards to the soft top just go and get one made. I got a new back window put in and got all new side windows made and replaced the rubber slide in bits with rivet type clips. i had some photos of it here somewhere so i will keep looking for them.
"If it ain't broken, smash it harder, then make it stronger!"
I saw an ad for a Evo in Sydney about 2-3months ago, 50000km, from memory it was going for $55,000, I'm not so keen about the looks but they might improve actually seeing the vehicle. I think a half cut would be near impossible to source.
About the soft top, I have had quotes for around $1600 for a new one manufactured locally. The original one I have is in good nick but it has shrunk from the sun, and is a bit drafty. Wasn't a problem in Qld but in cold windy Canberra it gives me the shits.
Complete canvas, genuine Mitsubishi J top (including sunroof) for approx AUS $1150 over the counter in Japan. $2900 from Canberra Mitsubishi. I told the Jap importer if he could supply it for under $2000 I'd buy one.

there was one of these in the trading post earlier this year a bit cheaper i think. i phoned and the guy and he said (can't remember exactly) either imported or bought car at auction and it was in a box in the back of the car.
possibly the same one surfacing after someone found it isn't working for them... but hells yeah would be sweet, worth checking out.
RE
Yeah, that supercharger you are talking about is no go. I checked it out about 3 months ago and it was not worth the effort. It came off an import (not pajero) and was missing quite a bit of gear. After much discussion and pricing up of bits, I opted not to go ahead with the deal.... The capa kits were a little too hexy for me at that stage. At the end of the day, got a hold of a 20000kms old 3L V6 to replace my rather tired one... A much cheaper option.. The pajs seem to go quite well with the standard V6. I use mine for towing as well as offroading, and I can still do 170km/h and easily sit at 120 with a 20ft glass boat behind me... If you want to go quick buy a road car...or a suzuki (with psi and efi)
