Mogrels in wet - report

ok, finally had a chance to use the mogrels in the wet. In my opinion they are better than my old bfg mts.

yes they are skatey on wet roads but the bfgs were, in my opinion, worse.

I tried smoking them up and all the did was a small sketching grab n spin, mostly grab.


overall opinion of these cheap simex look a-likes is that they are great off road (stick like flies to dog poop), on-road good but skatey at highway speeds with cross winds, better than bfg mts in the wet.


i am very pleased I made this purchase and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a more agressive off-road tyre.

yep, they getting cheaper, too, almost worth considering, now, as when they first came out they were too dear(wasnt much dearer to get real simex's). Mongrels are on my probable list, christover

I got em too and i cant fault them i hammer them in the wet /dry, dirt /mud and they are really good had them on my CJ7 now they are on my hilux. i use them 24/7 and just put up with the noise but its not that bad I put about 10000 km on them and they are still about 85% so much for all the bagging they got!!!

I kinda like the noise and so do my passengers. Mind you the noise they make neutralise the noise from the gearox which is a nice thing. I can hear my stereo again. go figure, neverthought to sounds could neutralise themselves.


took them out for another thrashing in the wet tonight and still can't fault these tyres. even under heaving breaking to avoid a red light camera they hugged the road nicely as the full force of the 4 wheel discs was applied.


if you a concidering new tyres, then these are definately worth a look at.

sounds pretty cool actually

i considered them a while back - $140ea for retreads (not remoulds) was not a bad price - but my cousin had a bad run with some AT retreads shredding at speed so i was wary

but if you're getting good results then kudos to motorway

have had them at 145 on the highway and they run true and smooth. been up and down the highway (bris-gold coast) a few times now with them and they are a much nicer ride than any other tyre I've used.

Anyone know where i can get mongrels in WA???? Perth area?? I read on the motorway site that they arnt recommended for highway driving??

Anythoughts? :?

FYI, I heard from a tyre guy up here that he sold a a set that didnt last long due to running extended on the highway on a Hilux. He reckons it's the hot weather up here that makes a lot of difference.

Handling in the wet

Just another thing I thought of the other day, the wet weather handling might be improved if you sipe some of the lugs.

a guy i know that has em on his wrangler and he drove all the way from logan to landcruiser mountain park for the recent ASCC round and didn't have any problems. (about a 2.5 hr drive)

That's interesting that people mention BFG MTs as being crap on wet highways. My BFG Long Trails are also shocking on wet blacktop, as I re-discovered driving back to Canberra from near Melbourne via Cann River. Went for some exciting skates on the Monaro a few times.

I have run 32x11.5 BFG MT's (old style) on my Zuk .. and had nothing but respect for them wet or dry .. they held on just fine .. way better than my swampers did, but even they performed adquately during a few emergancy avoideance procedures at 100plus on the south eastern in the rain my current claws SUCK big time in the wet .. I can lock em up easily in the wet with my current dodgy brakes .. in the dry they are more than adaquate for a 190cm tall sierra ...

Strange..... my Hankook Muddies were heaps better in the wet on road than either my BFG A/T's or BFG Muddies.

I think half my breaking problems are directly related to my BFGs.....

yes, but I've had this with all agressive tyres in the past. Not only in my zook but friends zooks also.

it's just the tread blocks, I seem to notice it more on brand new roads. which there are a lot of in my neck of the woods at the moment with a 2 lane road being extended to 4 from the base of Mt Nebo, where I am, all the way, 12km, to the city.

I felt it with the BFG Mts, also with any other MT that I've experienced in both my rig and other rigs.

I'm not concerned with it at all. I still can't get the thing to spin. Try as I might and all they do is grab. bahahaha, I'm in love with my mongrels. Think I might have to save some more $$$ and get some to make a kawfee table with. bahahaha.

I have just been looking at the Hankook Muddies and was wondering how you found them in general and how noisy are they? Pluses/minuses?

When the hancooks I ran were new on my bro hilux .. they were really crap in the wet .. they actually improved abfer about 10,000kms ..
If the set I used were any example they are actually a pretty good tyre, they did about 30,000kms on the lux including servral outback trips, then went on a GQ that put about 20,000 on em (10,000kms in one trip mostly outback, car was busting everywhere.. tyres held together just fine) Ten onto my Zuk .. now on another members Zuk .. the carcass flexed well (was very well broken iin by that stage) .. I would purchase em again if I needed a nice "mild" tyre .. good value for money ..

They're not the ultimate in roadholding but then again no muddie is.....

Noise and grip were good compared to other profiles - Simex Centipedes (but not the Jungle Trekker or Extreme Trekker) I have found to be better all round but they cost a bit more.

Of course where you do most of your driving is the critical factor... what works in Melbourne with 50/50% offroad may not in Brissy with 80/20% and Vice Versa.

Ask antt he's running those now.... I only changed to get wider rims and didnt wanna have to pay fitting and balancing costs, which would have cost damn near what the new rims did.......

I think the more meat on the muddie the better the work both on and off road, so with the BFG's getting into the second half of their life it may not be the fairest comparison. Still it was the comparison I could make bakc to back....

went out fora bit of a play with andy yesterday to test out the mongrels in soft slushy mud. these things were very impressive, it just crawled it way around nicely even with shit gearing i didn't need to flare the clutch at all. they just griped and I let the engine and mongrels do the work.

here's a really lame poser pic, oh and I've still not fixed the front or rear bump stops. rubbing wasn't all that noticeable.

also posting a pic of andy playing on some dudes pile of fill on our way out of the track. hehehe.

Do they make em in 16" ? I need some good off road tyres, my Cooper ST's just dont cut it in the mud.. Nice tough tyre but not aggressive enuff.. :?

No 16", only 15". 31x10.5, 32x10.5 & 33x12.5. The 31's and the 32's come out of the same mould but the 32's are monoform which gives them an extra 1mm on the sidewalls so they called them a different size. Use the diameter dimensions for the 32(792mm). The 31's & 32's are generally using Bridgestone carcasses and the 33's are generally Coopers & Pro-Comp's but there are some others used. This is according to the Motorway guy at the 4x4 show in Melb.

got 32's on my vitara and cant get them to break traction in the wet. couldn't suggest a better tyre for a zook!!!!!

it's just the tread blocks, I seem to notice it more on brand new roads. which there are a lot of in my neck of the woods at the moment with a 2 lane road being extended to 4 from the base of Mt Nebo, where I am, all the way, 12km, to the city.


I thought I'd seen that "orange thang" before... complete with newflavour stickers.... I've passed you on the way to work a heap of times on the motorbike and maybe even in the Vit a few times.....

I live in The Gap.

Well if I am going to go up to 32"s then I may well look at this as a solution as the BFG muddies are going down in tread pretty rapidly with the welded rear.

However, I think THAT would mean going the full 2" on body lift to get the extra clearance and better gearing would help too.

At this stage there was supposed to be a moritorium on Vitara spending but it just never seems to happen lol.

hey skippy what pressures are you running ? when aired down to say 7-10psi do they bag at all?

im running retread muddies , bag good at 10psi or less but i want something a bit more agressive yet cheap , the mongrels sound like the go , do you do any rock areas? if so how do they perform ? lost many lugs yet ? my muddies are getting fairly shredded
if its worth doing do it intensly , better still do it with MADPASSION
