swb gq windows
swb gq windows
hey guys i havent asked this question for a while i want to get rid of the 2 piece windows in my shorty (the rear ones) and put in single piece perpex. just wondering if anyone has done this and how you have secured the perspex or glass into the old window frame. my frames are stuffed so i want to try and avoid using them if possible. Any ideas and photos would be greatly appreciated.

If you keep the rear seat it is illegal to have windows that don't open. The other option is to find someone who has recently chopped the back off and grab their window frames (zook60 just cut his). They are easy to replace as there's no glue involved, they just push out and back in.
If you want to change the rego to a 2 seater, then there is no problem.

They dont fit, The lwb windows are shorter then the swb's. You need to find some from a wreckers or like others said a ute chop. Thats what I did.stuckwithlux wrote:i think some dx model gq's came with a solid single piece of glass. try some wreckers. i did see someone selling them on outers or 4wdmonthly in the 4 sale section. ill try finding it.

Hi people,Im an Autoglazier here in NZ and we do this all the time for people.
Three options - 1, A single peice of 5mm toughened glass fitted in claytonrite rubber about $200 a side.
- 2, A single peice of 5mm toughened glass fitted in urethane about $260 a side.
- 3, A single peice of 6mm Polycarb fitted in claytonrite rubber for about $180 a side.
Acrylic plastic would be cheaper but we dont recommened for this application (glass is better anyway)
Now since you Aussie's get stuff generally cheaper than us, it should give you some approx idea of cost.
It is a simple job really.

If its anything like the LWB, then the entire sliding window frame and glass is removed (you wonder what held it in in the first place) , then the one piece glass and rubber seal simply fit into the lip the body makes. Same sort of setup as the windscreenMudbum wrote:Photos on forums are not my strong point but if you need i will enlist some help posting a pic.mudmav wrote:hey mate can you give me some more info as to wether you remove the old steel frames and then use the calytonrite on the lip that the body makes. also do you have any photos of this as i am struggling to understand how it works

The LWB however is not a flat piece of glass and has a slight curve to it, I dont know if the shorty is the same.
I dont know if this helps, but its some info on how you replace the sliding windows http://www.gqpatrol.com/windowframes/index.htm

Yep shortys are slightly curved also but not enuf to affect what is trying to be accomplished.
LWB being a shorter glass,a flat peice is a bit more noticable.

PS. Use rope method NOT screwdriver method. The correct tool for this is a hook tool and even then the rubber is prone to ripping.
