1HD FTE to replace 1HZ

Post by just cruizin' »

I am thinking about either turboing my 1HZ or replacing it with a 1HD FTE in my 100 Live axle. I know the aftermarket turbo would be a cheaper option then a whole new engine but I am wondering about the advantages of going the electronic injection with the capability of adding the chip at a latter stage.

Where would be the best place to source the engine. Wrecker or as a halfcut.

I assume the mounting would be the same.

Anyone got any rough prices on a 1HD FTE.

hdft motor

the hdfte and gearbox would be the best option, 12-15k or there abouts to convert, wreckers in Archerfield QLD do this conversion then sell your 1hz and 5 speed (if its manual) or trade in....
Next option is a hdft out of a later 80 series, looking at 8k second hand, and hey, it al bolts up....and once you sell the 1hz, your not that much out of pocket when you consider the turbo on the 1hz is going to cost 4k.
Lastly, turbo the hz...well and truely done before and it makes a big difference, but tale a hdft 80 series for a drive first b4 you do this....

as andrew has said, big dollar option to go the HD-FTE, not only to source the animal in the first place but then to splice the wiring, expensive if you pay for it, a headache if you DIY.

having owned both an aftermarket turbo 1HZ and a factory 1HD-FT, my observation is that the 1HZ is much more driveable, up to about 80km/h - the torque is there from idle and the boost gives it an awesome kick. The turbo 1HZ is also the pick off road without question, especially with the lower 1/2 gear ratios in the 1HZ gearbox. However on-road, especially on the highway, the 1HD-FT is twice the engine a turbo 1HZ can be, and is far more economical to boot. It's a two edged sword - I love my HD-FT but I miss the 1HZ turbo.

cheers
