top mount intercooler

Hi guys, i want to mount an intercooler on top of my GQ 4.2td and was wondering where to put the air cleaner? Anyone know of a suitable cyclone to fit? The intercooler measures 300x450. Also has anyone been to Berrima Diesel for a tune up? They have a diferent opinion on turbo diesels than others.

i just use my pre cleaner as my main air cleaner now

I use the air cleaner from a ZD30 GU. Either a 2.8 or 3ltr GU cleaner works really well (mounts behind LHS head light).

Absolutely none. Bolts straight in there into mounts already there in the GQ

yeah I use a top mount from an Izuzu MU or a Jackeroo. A little bit bigger than factory.

Nice simple set up,where did you get the flange on the intake? would a flexable hose be allright after the turbo? as i think ill have a few more bends to and from the cooler

Queensland diesel spares supplied the bends but any truck joint will be able to supply em for you. my pipe work on the turbo side has been redone since those pics and is a lot nicer now

Cool theres a truck specialist not far away.Is the cooler mounted to the engine or body? If its to the body what absorbs the movement from the engine?

yep from the fire wall to the radiator support

you have to be sure that the cooler doesnt rub on anything as i mounted mine on top all was good did a bit of 4wding and the cooler droped down a little and started rubing a little on my pipeing under it and wore a hole in it it does make a difference to power esecially when hot , i noticed it when i took mine back off, slight loss of power :cry:

is now mounted to the engine. I wouldn't mount to the body like the factory do as the engine torques and flex's seperately to the body especially at 5500rpm in 2nd hey "its aford not a nissan"

yep very good point BIG GQ , i dont think ill do that again in a hurry
im going to give my baby a service tomorrow (had a hard time) , but if you had a body lift you should have enough room, im going to redoo mine so i have more clearance around it and no piping under it but if that is no good then i will probly mount it to the motor and make up some flexy rubber seal on top , it was my first prototype and it went well for a slap together job

what a mate did with his was put a spacer under the bonnet scoop and mount a 10" fan in it, that way at low speeds it can be an intercooler instead of an interheater. From all reports, it works great!! When i put a front mount I/C on the rodeo, i had it fan forced, and at high revs at low speed, you could feel the difference with the fan off and on.

Did you have any trouble mounting it? I want to replace my cleaner, which sits where a second battery usually would. Any idea on what one would cost?

I assume this is the same airfilter as a TD42T GQ, if so then works pretty well but would be a bit small for big boost.
93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)

Yep got it off ebay,fits perfect on a gq.The gu air box works real well,dosnt restrict it at all

can you notice the difference with the intercooler?

mine gets hot when on boost for long periods of time, i'm thinking an intercooler might help.

Herc, you're right about whether the air is getting the full use of the core as air (or fluids for that matter) will always take the path of least resistance. On all the intercoolers I've been involved with if they have the tube orientation like the above one I'll always put an air deflector into the inlet side to make sure a proportion of air has to take the long way around.
It can be done on that intercooler as well it's simply welding the deflector into the inlet neck you don't even have to remove the endtank to do it.
