2lt injector pump

2lt injector pump
right my bundy is giving me the shits
its been off the road over winter and had its sills rebuilt, rear lights rewired, new dash and heaps of other little bits an it was going for its rego/mot next week and today i find that the spindle into the injector pump is pissing diesel out!! so its rebuild time or do i put something fun in it instead?
i also suspect that the head is cracked too, its not too keen at starting in mornings and puffs greyish smoke when it finally starts, hmm im talking myself into an engine change arnt i!
so do i go do the injector pump or do i buy a rover v8 or along those lines and put that in instead???

hard start, smoke.. maybe its just stuffed glow plugs,
injector pump, if its the shaft that sticks out the side for the aircon idle up then just pull it off and replace the 2 $0.20 o-rings. and your good to go.

as already suggested, it's probably just glow plugs, they are also pretty cheap and very easy to replace. test them first - take off the busbar and check for continuity, their resistance is very low and when they fail they go open circuit.dr who? wrote:...the spindle into the injector pump is pissing diesel out!! ...
the seal and shaft are available as a unit from toyota or aftermarket for about $30. Any diesel specialist will be able to supply the parts, fitting is about 2 - 3 hours, and it is quite possible to DIY without pulling the pump off. It is necessary to take the top cover off the pump and be very careful about matching up all the bits that come off, it's fiddly but not difficult.

a cracked head will manifest one or more of: mysterious coolant leakage, mysterious cooling system pressurisation, oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil, overheating especially on hills, rough running at idle, possibly hydraulic locking after standing overnight, steam in the exhaust.
as for engine swaps, if you're going to do it you have to really, really, really love your LJ70 - the gearbox, axles and chassis will not cope with much more power/torque than it has now - if you 'fix' the engine by up-rating it, it's not rocket science to see how you'll have to 'fix' everything else. Coupled with the appalling, pitchy ride and patheitc off-road articulation, it's hard to understand why anyone would want to persevere with such a vehicle (I am a 3-time bundera owner), unless you are dedicated to also swapping in a proper gearbox and full sized rear axle.
I don't know where your 2L-T is at (nor which variant it is), however no matter which flavour it can have a few more ponies squeezed out of it without compromising engine life. Intercooling and fitting a better turbo yields impressive results and fitting an EGT and keeping the temps below 600C with boost around .8 - .9 bar is safe, and will keep you in top gear up most hills even with 35" tyres.
in the end it's your vehicle and you decide, but look at what else you could do with the same cash you think you'll spend on the conversion (include axle and gearbox, you'll have to do it sooner or later) plus the price you might get fromt he sale of the bundy, if you don't hink you can live with the mighty 2L-T any more.

from a hassle point of view, repairing would be the way to go, its already running 36inch hawgs which measure 35inch in real life, so power is an issue
but as you say DD theres no real coolant lose or contaminated oil, so glow plugs could be a real possibility
i have also sourced another injector pump, so swapping them is a definate option
power wise ive been cruising ebay and have spotted a VAG turbo of a merc sprinter van, which has a 2.7 litre engine (if this matters?? im not well read about turbo swaps) so it could be a possibility
as for the drivetrain strength, i (luckily) came accross a pair of 80 series elocked axles on ebay, so they are an option, gearbox wise im open to opinions!!
hmm maybe i should just swap th pumps and try and squeeze more power out of the 2l-t,VAG turbo, intercooler, maybe propane!!!! maybe getting abit ahead of myself!!

If it's the lever for the throttle that's leaking then it's an easy fix. Whip the top off the pump and replcae the orings and the top gasket. Mark the lever before you remove it from the shaft. Remove the govenor screw so you don't bend the lever inside when refitting the top...

power is a better indicator than engine size. 2L-T is around 75kW so look for something off an engine around 100kW, any smaller and you'll be back where you started, any bigger and lag will forever be your enemy.power wise ive been cruising ebay and have spotted a VAG turbo of a merc sprinter van, which has a 2.7 litre engine (if this matters?? im not well read about turbo swaps) so it could be a possibility
your R151F is good for 120kW/350Nm, if you can pump those numbers out of a 2L-T you're doing very well. The transfer is the same as a rela landruiser so no strength issues there. The 80 series axle swap is well covered in a 2 part article in 4x4 Australia Magazine a couple of years ago - someone on here might have it and can scan it for you.as for the drivetrain strength, i (luckily) came accross a pair of 80 series elocked axles on ebay, so they are an option, gearbox wise im open to opinions!!
propane fumigation doesn't really work very well on indirect injected engines, on the 2L-T you might even suffer a loss because the LPG displaces some charge air - you might gain efficiency but lose power. intercooling and efficient boost are the keys to 2L-T power.hmm maybe i should just swap th pumps and try and squeeze more power out of the 2l-t,VAG turbo, intercooler, maybe propane!!!! maybe getting abit ahead of myself!!

DD, yeah im going to look into turbos more and intercoolers, i think ill put the 80 series axles under it after all, i was saving them for another truggy type cruiser but most comps overhere require your truck to be road legal and its only a toy anyway as have a hilux as dd
