Help PLEASE.... the zook wont idle

Post by junior80 »

hey guys

I replaced the spark plugs today and that half sorted the problem.

It started out when you first turned the engine on it would idle for about 30 seconds then die. turn it on again the same as many times over as you like. then it would turn on and idle nicely but if you rev it up to 5grand then take your fott off the go pedal it would die. now if you do that while rolling down the road you can pop the clutch and bump start it and drive but as soon as you put the clutch back in it will die again.

so it seems that if you don't rev it up to th number 5 on the rev counter it will go back to idle nicely. if you pas the 5 mark you have to stop the car, wait a sewcond then turn it back on and it would be fine.

can anyone help? I'm going wheeling in it tomorrow and it's going to be a pain in the arse.

thanks guys

oh yeah it's a 1.3 carby 89 model

Where you live at ?

Also just check the fuel pump is pumping consistantly.

If your not sure how to do it, take the fuel line off from where it joins the carby and turn it over for like 30 secs, pumping the fuel into a bottle.

It should be a consistant flow if its not you either have a blocked filter or a stuffed fuel pump. If you any major problem let me know as i have a complete manifold and carby along with a heap of other shit here but not sure of the state of it.

Cheers nick

If you want to call me just PM me and I'll send you my number.

I'm not a betting man but I'd say $10- its the dizzy as he never cleaned it from the last time he was in Rivo with us.

The only reason I said ring me was if he's not to far away I'd go and give him a hand.

But yeah I'll take $10 bucks off you if you want.

I would actually bet ajainst my self with a zook cause it always the last thing you check. :bad-words:

You better let us know what it is now.

Zook carby idle jets are really small, and common to get craped up. When you get it sorted, run a secondary fuel filter between the pump and the carby inlet. The pump diaphram can break down and loose bits of rubber that get in everything.

Take the aircleaner off the top of the carbi. Get it running rev it pretty hard but not too hard then stick your hand over the carbi! Try to keep it goin with your hand over the top. Your hand will be covered in crap and it should work again!

I do thid when theres anything wierd going on in the engine bay and so far it has fixed every thing!

The mechanic over the road said they used to tune up one of the older fords with that trick! ;)

yeah i squirted the crap out of it with carby cleaner, tried sucking the shit out with my hand on top now it'll start and run fine but even the slightest rev and it wont go back to idle it'll just die in the arse. one of my mates is coming round to give me a hand him knowing more about it than me, and wer're going to pull it appart and clean it with carby clean and compressed air. I'm convinced its crap in the idler jet causing the problem.

Use a rag over the top of the carby, and have a good hold on the rag. The vacum generated by blocking the intake fraws the crap out of the jets. But if the stuff in the jets is too big, it will just move round but not come out. and in the end it will block up again. Take the carby apart and clean it with compressed air

You serious or this some weird sort of humour ?

Myself and a few others have done it before to try and clear the idle jet. Never broke any hands.

Interesting, I can see how when I think about it... but you sure a zook could even suck enough air to the engine to do that though ?

Never seen it with a zook (or small motor at all) but have seen a guy try to stop a bus diesel with his hand over the intake pipe, after the fuel cut solenoid failed. Messy messy hand.

it did fix it for a little bit, but then it started playing up again. did end up taking it for a trail bash

I'll take it appart later and clean it properly, or get a corrolla carby without all that emissions bullshit.
