Where to buy steel from in Melbourne

Post by Mud_Muncher »

Bit of a Noob question I know. I need to knock up a rear bar for my car to get a RWC. I was wondering where I can buy 3.6mm steel (to match front bar) around the Dandenong area. It needs to be about 1200mm by 250mm.

Thanks

Ok here's my plan.

The rear of my Jimny looks currently like this.

Image

And because quotes I got for a rear bar were 600-1000 and I am a tight a ss,
I was think of making a bar similiar to this.

Image

It would be made out of simple piece of metal with the bottom corners angled of slightly. Will then put thick steel post which go through the bar and bolt onto the chassis to use as recovery points.

Will it look ok as one flat piece of metal painted black if I dull the sharp edges with a file or similiar? Btw the Boldy lift is now out.

Why dont you try the C channels they use for factory roof's etc. Thats what I used, they are galvanised too! But they are thinner than you are after. Once the ends are cut, if you weld some flat onto it, it'll be much stronger.

There's a reason the tube is cheaper, in all probability it is hydraulic tubing which is much softer than a good quality DOM (drawn over mandrel) tubing that is commonly used for roll cage fabrication.

Thanks all for your help! I ended up going to Melsteel in Hallam. Very Very helpful able to cut sheet metal to an unusual shape (trapezoid) only $26 which includes 2 x 20x40x300 recovery points.
