Changing oil every 10 000km Diesel problems

Post by henry33 »

Hi,
Looking at buying [only talked on phone] 91 mav xl, diesel, non turbo with 205 000km, no real 4wd, some towing 17ft caravan on holidays and driving to work. Price $9800

Last two owners owned for about 10 yrs and serviced at the one place, at about 8-10 000kms. No major work done to injectors or pump.

Question is, should I be put off by not being serviced every 5000kms and what problems are caused by not changing oil at 5000kms. Also, any good vehicle [diesel] inspection mechanics in the Wynnum Manly area [Brisbane]

Thanks in advance

Craig

Hmm I personally wouldn't be put off, mines got 510,000k's on it and has genrally been serviced every 5,000-10,000k's. I personally have noticed that the oil does degrade a lot once it gets over 10,00k's though and particularly if you're doing a lot of towing and hard work. But really mine has been flogged towin horse floats and boats its whole life and it hasn' had a drama. Sorry I don't have any technical info for you. Good luck with it.

depends on motor a bit.

older ones are 5000km oil change. newer ones are ment to be 10000km oil change. however type of use and type of oil and fuel used can make a big difference.

A 91 Mav should have its oil changed every 5000 kms. If you still are interested but want to limit your chances of having to do a rebuild in the near future, take it to a diesel mechanic and have them give it a good inspection. You will want to be sure that it has a leak down test done. If they are only doing engine oil every 8-10, than it is a good possibility that they did not do all the other lubes on time or at all. A quick thing you can check for is blow-by. Just take a look at the air fliter to see if it is oil foiled (provided it is a paper filter). If you see blow-by oil on the filter than walk away and don't bother paying a mechanic to inspect it.

You can expect to replace the injectors. Hiflo has a good price on new injectors (not reconditioned). The IP may be good for a long time. It may just need seals but you might as well budget in a pump rebuild. I had mine rebuilt here in Canada for $2,000. You can get a rebuilt pump from Hiflo for around $1200.

Good luck.
