I have a 1990 Maverick SWB auto which is getting a 5" lift in 2 weeks and I want to put either 33's or 35's on it, I have the below diff questions...
1. How many people have a 4.2 auto's (3.9 std diff ratios with autos) and run 33's or 35's?
2. How many people have stuffed their gearboxes due to running 33's or 35's?
3. Is a transmission cooler needed to prevent excessive heat build up in the gearbox due to running bigger tires?
4. Do I need to spend huge $$$$ to replace diff ring and pinions?
Please Help!!

I don't have an auto but do have freinds that do, a trans cooler is always a good idea, the thing to check is which auto you have there is a small n large version, 3.9 diffs shood be fine I've fitted 4.11 diffs to an auto on gas running 35 tsl swampers n it was good, there is a set advertised on ol but they are the most common ratio n not worth much from wreckers,
either way it will be fine with whichever auto you have as 33s are not much bigger then standard the main thing to do is get the tailshaft angle rite so you have no vibrations

Thanks Nastytroll, I'm going to see the guy at my local Revolution Racegear shop about the B&M 'Hi-tek engine oil & automatic cooling systems', they have fans built onto them. I'll start with one of those and get either 33's or 35's and see how it goes and then wait to win lotto to pay for the diff conversions to 4.3 or 4.6's....nastytroll wrote:I don't have an auto but do have freinds that do, a trans cooler is always a good idea, the thing to check is which auto you have there is a small n large version, 3.9 diffs shood be fine I've fitted 4.11 diffs to an auto on gas running 35 tsl swampers n it was good, there is a set advertised on ol but they are the most common ratio n not worth much from wreckers,

dude before u order that 5 inch lift ask urself do i realy need 5 inchs of lift... 35's will fit under 2inchs with a little persuasion... the lift is not increasing ur flex, only clearence. ud be better with a quality 2-3 inch lift and a little guard trimming. if u still want a bit of hieght chuck in 2 inchs of body lift. 5 inchs will play havoc with ur drive line and steering angles. very expensive to sort out.
i have 5 inches plus 2 inch body lift in my shorty and even though it is finally sorted, i reckon it owes me about 6-7g in suspension and steering components(i didnt skim and bought the best gear though). dont forget tailshaft money too.
mine is also auto. was 3.9 ratio but now 4.6. rides on 37mtrs. auto hasnt failed me yet. but as for over heating u wont know til it dies unless u put a temp gauge on it and monitor. a few recent threads on here about gq autos..

Viperguy,
I have already bought all the components to do the lift as I didn't want to do the body lift due to the GQ's being famous to body cracking etc. So I went 5" springs as they were the same price as 4", couldn't resist.
I'll see how it goes with all the other issues etc and worry about it then as the Maverick is only a weekend toy...
