Which do you think will be better.

freshly rebuilt (basicly stock) 327 Chev on straight gas

or

Injected 5lt on petty?

We have one of each and can`t decide on which way we want to go. Either way will have a turbo 400 behind with a GQ transfer behind that.

personally id consider both of them to heavy for a buggy.
if i had to chose id prob pick the one on gas providing getting gas to the buggy was easy enough, as its simpler to install and less complucated to play with

327 on gas. No computers, no wiring to be ripped out by a stray spotters strap. Oops sorry got you mixed up with webbie.

Simple is good.

And bagder, too heavy for a buggy :?: Did you happen to see what the winner of Ozrock and i think Werock is running in their buggy?

From memory there was only a few kilos difference between supposedly light rangie crap and chev stuff anyway. Rangie trannies are heavy.

Guts i would only think of using the 327 if it has hei cause points and all the crap that come with it sucks.
As for the efi 5l i assume that its holden if it is very easy to wire and very very reliable probably will cost more to set up but that depends on what stuff you already have.
It really all depends on wheather you have all the gas stuff or if you have stuff to set up the efi motor.
my vote is for the 5L efi.

Yeah the Mate I`m building it with is an auto lecky and has wired heeps of 5lt holden motors, not that there hard. He`s even done a lexus into a hilux :lol:

but the 5lt on gas you can run off 4 wires and you will be able to find parts any where in aus.

Only problem is finding parts for the HEI dizzy when it shits itself during an event. Ask Peter Antunac about it. That same dizzy cost him a win at Put Up or Shut Up this year. Had he been running a holden motor and dizzy he could have had parts in a matter of minutes as there was plenty of spectator vehicles at this event running an EFI holden motor and there is no doubt he could have borrowed the parts to fix it.

Personaly as much as i hate setting points dizzies up they are a much better set up as there is less important parts to fail. And you can generaly bodgy something up to make it run.

Biggest issue with the HEI is the module is inside the dizzy and the coil is in the cap so its so hard to wire up a coil or module from something else to get it to run. The holden one can use a module from almost any other electronic system and almost any coil will make it run.

Im a holden man over a chev but the one issue Holden V8s suffer from is lack of oil pressure. From factory they commonly only have just enough oil pressure to turn off a 7psi oil light at idle. This can be fixed but its not a simple fix.

its not aften that a HEI spits the dummy, but there is always Murphy's LAW :)

very easy to carry around a spare cap with the coil, and a spare module, this is a must, along with a mixer and converter repair kit and liquid steel.

Since a few have bagged the old rangie / Landy idea does anybody acctually have the weights of each type of engine or is it all hear say?
I still to this day havent seen anybody kill a rover v8 in a comp! Unlike the commo v6s or even gonads with trouble cooling his 5ltr.

Ruff you of all people would have an idea on the diffrence in weight to most motors? Any idea.

The comment about all the top runners in rockcrawling run big cast block v8s then be surprised as i am shore this year will start to push towards the powerfull super light engines now Evan more 4 pots will come outa the woodwork im shore.

Rover EFI V8 147KGs dressed from memory. The others im not sure on sorry.

The motor (3.9Discovery)in my old buggy has been in the rig since January 2004 and has been on its lid more than most. It was also fitted to my Hilux for a few months before that. I drove it like i stole it and in all that time it had a set of head gaskits put on it because i forgot to turn the fans on at an event. Its still going strong. Im not saying go the Rover but never discount this engine it is a great choice for a Buggy if you want to go V8.

Would i ever build another with a Rover V8. NO. Only because if i ever build another it will be 4Cyl.

Cheezy built two chassis at the same time, both the same chassis

1. Rover V8, auto, LT230, rover diffs on 37's from memory

2. Chev 350 steel block, auto, GQ transfer, GQish diffs on 40's from memory

There was only kilos separating the two. Rangie engine is lightish, rangie trans and transfer case is not.

Have an LT230 here, it's bloody huge.
