Visual difference between 3.5 and 4.4

Post by G60MAN »

I am looking at getting a 1984 4 door range and I was wondering what the visual difference between 3.5 and 4.4 in an 1984 4 door range.

Is there something specifically noted in the engine bay somewhere.

It is currently unregistered so the guy does not have the registration papers on him but it does have the registration sticker on the window.

Thanks

3.5 has engine number on a machined flat surface on the top of the block (just under the head) between 2-3 on LH of engine.

4.4 doesn't. I think its at the back of the block between the Vs, but not sure.

If it has P76 heads it will probably have tin rocker covers. If rover heads there will be a spacer between the inlet manifold and head, if a Rover manifold.

Yep, 3.5 engine # next to dip stick.
P76 has the engine # at the back of the block near the left hand head.
You need a mirror to read it.

If the sticker has the engine number as 4400xxxx then it has been registered with the 4.4 in it, if it has a 2brl stromberg carb then its the factory leyland manifold, if it has twin strommies as per rover V8 and no noticeable spacers its a 3.5. Also quickest way to identify is if the thermostat housing is mounted on top of the manifold its a 4.4.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
