UHF Selection - Comments?

Hi

Im looking at getting my first UHF radio and this is what I have in mind:

Uniden UH088SX DIN Size UHF Radio
RFI CD900 Rugged 6.5db Antenna

I live in the NT and it would most prob only used for convoy trips. I was planning to mount the aerial on my bullbar and tap into the cd players power source.

Was also thinking of getting a cheap handheld later in the year..

Any Cons to this setup?

GME radios are better.

GME 4400 and a good GME aerial = no dramas.

Australian made...

In side by side testing the GMEs typically reach further than Unidens, and produce better clarity at their limit. (I think Kenwood and Icom are better again, but I think they're also more expensive.)

For typical convoy work, the difference isn't an issue - both have sufficient range for club use. If you can't reach somebody, go look for them - or wait for them to come look for you.

Go with the one you like the most.

You may blow fuses, depends on how good the wiring and fuses are? I guess you probobly aren't going to be transmitting when the cd player is at full volume so it may be all right, trial and error.
Also make sure you get a good earth - ive heard of people using the radios earth, finding it with a multimeter when the headlights are off and accidentally tapping into the lighting wire as it would have 0 volts, turn the lights on and you have dramas!

RFI CD900 are an excellent antenna. Very strong and good signal. Highly recommended!!!

I have also read about tapping into the ciggy lighter wires. Would this be a better option?
