quick question...
whats the differences between mt and nt and when did the body shapes change? and what are the years of the mt and nt?
i gathered from the bible the mt had a wider track length. would this mean wider axles?

the early models where 1 litre 1982 smaller in every way4WD ethnic person - fixed version wrote:what are the differences between Wide track an Narrow track models and when did the body shape change? and what are the years when the serria was a WT or an NT?
i gathered from the bible the WT had a wider wheel track. would this mean wider axles?
then in 1984 they brough out a 1.3 litre... now including a 5 speed box
later on in 1989 this was change again with a new body an other thing such as
.wider diff appox 2 inch each side (yes the axels are longer)
.rear wheels connected to hand brake instead of having a centre brake on the back of the transfer case
.lower gearing in the diffs
.differant body such as flairs an bonnet
.tacho
.spring mounts off set off chassie
then in 1996 they brought out a coil sprung serria ... but this has acouple flaws in it what i see ... chain driven transferr case an chassie an diff strenght seems to be lower than the others ... but this might only be due because the increase in flex
also after 1990 some serrias came out with throttle-body fuel injection .... i belive this to only in import models
hope this helps

Also 4WD Ethnic Person:
WT's run a different chassis. In order to increase roll stiffness, when the track width increased, the spring mounts were moved outboard on the chassis the same amount. this makes for A) a messier looking chassis and B)No more real tyre clearance when steering than a NT because the tyres still touch the springs.
However, WT chassis have more reinforcing.
PErsonally, I would buy a NT and source some wide track axles. Here are my reasons:
NTs have the transfer mounted hand brake, making rear disc conversions easier, and the rear brakes simpler
The NT dash is nicer (and does have a tach in JX models) JMO
There is no real advantage in the flares as they are too narrow for larger tyres anyway
NT's have deeper diff gears: 3.9 vs 3.7 for WT. WT's ran smaller tyres stock than the NT's, so you get better gearing with NT diff gears in WT housings.
The conversion: basically, you would need two housings, and axles. You wouldn't need any front knuckles or hubs (all the same), but you would need a tie rod and drag link.Rear backing plates are different, so you need them too.
The spring pads need to be swapped off the NT diff on the RHS front as they are right up against the diff, but all the other pads can just get cut off and slid in the appropriate amount. (it is not 2", more like 35mm)
If you have access to someone who can weld competently, it is an easy conversion and will leave you with a better car than a factory WT- it will flex better, feel softer and have lower gearing.

Just a few things I query in ofr57's post but I maybe wrong.
-WT's started in August 88 so some 88 models are widetrack
-I didn't think the bonnets changed when going to WT just from 1L to 1.3L to allow for the extra height-they had a bulge
-diff were higher geared in a WT but are interchangable with NT

Yep, the first WT's are 88 build and for 88 and I think just into 89 they had plastic WT flares -Nev wrote:Just a few things I query in ofr57's post but I maybe wrong.

Correct WT and NT bonnets are the same.
Yep WT 3.7:1 NT 3.9:1 this was to offset the smaller tyres on the WT
And in answer to the injection thing - USA only. All australian leaf sierras are carby. People have told me that some coilers were throttle body EFI, but I myself have never seen one.
There are some other small differences - WTs' have bigger rear wheel bearings, larger diameter driveshaft flanges, an mysterious emissions control black box under the dash (energy polarizer, anyone?) I think it leans the car out on cruise as there is also a 5th gear switch on the gearbox.
