Hey I am selling my xj here in NSW. Its got 6.5 inch's of lift on 35 mtr's. There is a guy in Queensland that says he cant buy it because the r t a guy said that anything bigger then 4 inch lift is defect and can not get a rego.. Now I know there are big rigs up there so how does it work.

Yes, Qld sucks for modified 4wds. 35s on XJ - no. End of story. Not sure about the lift.
The only way around it is Individually Constructed Vehicle - and a modified XJ won't cut it. Think body/chassis swaps as a minimum...
Remember - just because it's on the road, it doesn't mean it's legal.

I was under the impression anything over 2" total (Spring, body and tyre) lift is illegal unless somehow (fundamentally impossible) it gets engineered. Even if it does get engineered, the DOT can set up an inspection site and still put you off the road as they have 'the final say'. Mind you I know more 4WDs that have illegal lift than those that don't (mines actually stock). If you go illegal its your risk (legal, moral, etc), I'm pretty sure some dodgy roadworthys get done.

There is seriously so much BS that goes around on lift legalities in QLD. Read the bloody modification manual. No where does it mention exact measurements for total allowable lift. 50mm body lift is allowed as long as QT inspects it-there is no blue plate for a body lift! Spring lift, well so long as the height between the rubber bump stop and chassis stop is not increased by more than a 1/3 it is legal. This will mean different allowable spring lift heights depending on each car. There is nothing saying these can't be done in unison.

50mm/2" body lift is allowed, as is a spring lift by UP TO 1/3 of the distance between bump stop and axle.
But to have a 6.5" lift - that would be 2" body and 4.5" sping lift. For a 4.5" spring lift to be legal, an XJ would have to come with a 13.5" gap between bump stop and axle
Must 4x4s are lucky to have 3" standard, and the maximum would have to be 6" - so the maximum legal spring lift would be somewhere between 0.5-2" - depending on vehicle.

Yep this is what I have found also. As for tyres Qld runs on the ADRs so a 15mm increase in height is it unfortunately. Good info guys. My jeep is simular to jimmy b"s just not as nice. Its not looking real good for selling my rig up there but that cool with me dont really want to sell anyways, its the wife..

Where did you hear this? I know the new national guidelines say this. However when I rang up last week to enquire about some issues I asked and was told Qld will not be adopting the national guidelines ( code whatever its called) due to them exceeding the current rules. Stace, your jeep is much much much nicer than Jimmys was, besides the lift ,they would probably complain about the drop boxes for the lower control arms in the front as well as the lift and tyres.sasjeep wrote:Good info guys. If you want to be technical, I believe the regulations specifically refer to altering the travel IN EITHER DIRECTION by more than one third of factory. If you free up your articulation, and they discover your DROOP has increased by more than one third, you can still be done.
However, there's bugger-all chance they'll discover that, so I wouldn't be concerned.
As for bump travel, space your bump stop! If you've lifted the suspension 4", but 2" increase is your limit, space your bump stops by 2" - it complies with the letter of the law.

I think you are right HS. Also fitting extended shackles to gain height is illegal.
