Just blown my rocky 2.8 diesel engine
and was just wondering about rebuild kits any good ones and how much do they cost.
all of my water is now in the sump and one of the push rods are going down into the engine, it starts but sounds like alot of metal is moving around.

i rebuilt mine about two years ago i think it was about $900 for the kit that was with new pistons and liners then i also needed the head redone new rocker arm s and a new cam some bits were hard to get but it cost me about $3300 just in parts and machining labour and the beer it took me to put it back together and back in +a new radiator and new injectors as well the only thing i did not touch was the fuel pump good luck

I did Rocky 1 about 4 years ago. Cost about $6k all up. A lot I know...
Wasn't until I tallied it all up that I realised.
Costs were:
Brand New Daihatsu OEM head $1300
Injector pump and injectors $1300
Bottom end (below the head) proffesionally rebuilt by Southcott's in adelaide $2500 (included new bearings, pistons, liners, valves for the new head - they dont come with valves, machining, etc).
Plus other assorted junk (water pump, hoses, etc, etc).
Mind you, the engine was still running when I did the rebuild. Was just a bit tired thats all. Have done 100,000km's since and still going well.
To be completley honest I probably wouldn't do it again. Just get a second hand turbo motor with low km's and chuck that in. It's probably the same cost by the end of it.
Other thing is, cos the DL motor uses liners, you can have difficulty getting the new liners to fit properly. Like most cast Iron block diesels, the blocks warp slightly and unless you get proper heat conduction from the new liners to the block, they will crack. It's difficult to explain but it all makes sense.

unbolted all most everything now just need to pick up my lifting chain tomorrow, drained the oil and stuck my little finger in the drain plug hole and all i can feel is a hill of scrap metal

It all depends on how there treated. With regular servicing they'll go the distance.
If not, they go bang.
Assuming you bought yours second hand like myself and many others, who knows what the previous owner was like...
Seems like yours went bang and is still running... just. Thats pretty commendable.

my wife just f ked mine too. Was servicing her pathfinder today so she took the rocky.Had just finished and was reading this when she rang and said your car just stopped.when i got there i found the oil sender had broken right off and it pumped all the oil out and siezed. she swears the oil light didnt come on

I just pulled out of a small town near horsham and just as i was about to go for 3rd gear it went bang, sounded like a fan belt coming of and hitting the fan.
When i striped it down the 3rd piston is in lots of bits and a far bit of the liner too. behind the liner where some of it has fallen away you can see a nice little crack in the block.
if some one can post pics i will email them.

I would be looking for another vehicle, on the cheap side. You should get something for less than a grand, or 2 at the most. You then have a heap of spares. You can then sell to offset your costs, and maybe end up with another motor for just about free. Check Ebay, or the local paper.
Mud makes excellent toothpaste.

damn thats one hell of an explosion. when i threw the #3 piston rod through the block, the pistion /rod did not suffer that much damage, although it took out atleast 5 inches by 5 inchs of cast iron completely. and this was only one side.
damn that sucks dude... something went seriously wrong there.

The block is different the oil pump has been removed from the sump to the front timing cover and is driven from the crank on the belt drive.
The cam is different as has no oil pump drive and has no retainer to hold it in , it must be pressed in or have a clip else where on the belt drive ones ( the block has no drill holes for retainer as well )
The sprocket idler has been removed but could be fitted again with some drilling and some mods.
The crank is longer and has a smaller keyway as does the cam.
The injector pump i have know idea as i have not pulled it apart but it has a different number on it.
But on the plus side the timing covers are interchangable. so with an electric oil pump and some machining it might be doable.
