Help with rim offset on middy
G'day all
I've got a FJ73 middy with patrol offset rims and 33x12.5 claws in it, and the rear tyres hit on the chassis hard when flexed and its still 2.5'' from the bump stops. So i need some new rims with a better offset, what are people running on their cars? is landcruiser offset enough to give me the room i need or should i get something else?
thanks for any help cheers

Dont put them on backwards !!!!!!! The holes are chamfered (sp?) to lock onto the wheel nuts (the angled bits on the nuts). If they go on backwards they will just flog around till they snap the studs and the wheel will overtake your car.hulsty wrote:whats a rim flip? do i just put them on backwards?
A fliped rim has the centre cut out of it, and flipped/moved so that the offset is majorly increase.

yeah i think i might have to go a wider offset than standard cruiser rims if they are only 12mm more outward than the patrol rims i currently have. The tyre is pretty solid on the rail and i still have 2.5'' of travel up to the bump stops. If i put the tyre onto my toyota 15x7 rims would this give me an idea how the offest will work? just as a test or should i find a 15x8 cruiser offset and try that. Guess i'll have to get some made to fit it all nicely, whats surprising is that i've got heaps of room at the front and turn full lock no troubles

flipped rims
i had the same problems with rims as you did, i know run flipped rims and have never had a problem with wheels rubbing, i picked up my rims off here for $400.00 for 5 rims and they were new, dont know what new ones are worth, just got too be lucky some times

You can try them on the 15x10's i have at work if you need dude. You'd just need to get the tyres changed over. Was going to take the tyres off them anyway.hulsty wrote:yeah i think i might have to go a wider offset than standard cruiser rims if they are only 12mm more outward than the patrol rims i currently have.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
If you are going to get someone to make some to suit, you may as well get them to flip your exsisting rims. there are plenty of places around that can do it and it is not all that expensive, or you may find some for sale allready done, like 75cruiser did.hulsty wrote:yeah i think i might have to go a wider offset than standard cruiser rims if they are only 12mm more outward than the patrol rims i currently have. All 7# series crusiers rub in basicly the same spots.
I had fourbys make up a set of 15 x 10, 1 and 5/8 inch backspace 5 spoke wheels and they have plenty of clearance with 36" et2's

ive been told also that you can buy sunnies in a kit form so that they can be modded to your specs and they are a heap cheaper than your stantard sunnies, thier like $60 unpainted ready for you too want you want with them

Anyone know where i can get sunnies in kit form? or rims made up in melb? I took some measurements today and came out with these:
The stock middy chrome wheels are 85mm from the centre hub to the the rear lip of the rim and with 10.5 rubber they just rub the wheel tubs on full compression. And once i put in my 33''x12.5'' rubber i've got no hope as they are wider and the rims are 90mm from the centre hub the the rear lip of the rim. So i think i'll need a rim thats 60mm from the centre hub to the rear lip of the rim? Its bloody annoying though because all these people with 7X series cruisiers i've spoken to just put on "stock" wheels of unknown proper offest with big rubber and have no problems or minor rubbing. When i went to a few wheel places the only rims they really had were 93mm from the centre hub to the the rear lip of the rim which would make things worse!
All my rubbing is at the rear too, fronts have no problem at all, and i've got plenty of room to push the rims out wider as on full compression there is heaps of room till the gurad lip
cheers

Hulsty, Your first problem is Patrol offset rims. No-one should run these on a cruiser. U will be able to get away with cruiser offset rims running 12.5 wide tyres. I ran 35x12.5 Radial claws on my middy with cruiser offset sunnys (15x8) and they cleared the chassis and only just rubbed on the inner guard.
Oh, and my 35's did rub on the guard lip and sliced the edge off the claw's tread.
Best bet is to borrow some and see. Good luck.

went to wombat 4x4 today, they had some cruiser offset rims there, -25 offset and the backspacing was 93mm! so measured my rims again and they are -28offset/90mm back spacing !! so better than factory and the buggers still rub!! why is my middy being more difficult then everyone elses!! Priced some other rims they had, extreme offset rims had 62mm backspacing which is like -56 offset, $105 each! might have to get them
When i brought "toyota offset" rims from wombat they weren't actually "toyota offset" rims. Not sure what the exact specs should be though...hulsty wrote:went to wombat 4x4 today, they had some cruiser offset rims there, -25 offset and the backspacing was 93mm! so measured my rims again and they are -28offset/90mm back spacing !! so better than factory and the buggers still rub!! why is my middy being more difficult then everyone elses!! I have the same problem. Stardard cruiser offset is still not enough. I tried the Pro-comp extra offset rims... they'll work fine at the back but they won't clear your brake calipers at the front. There is a mob in Moorabbin, just near where the old Ikea store was who flip your rims for approx $50 a corner, then you'll need to re-paint the rims cos the welds will look sh1t.
I've forgotten the name but I got if off here so a search will find it pretty quick.
Let us know how u go cos I have plans to do the same the minute I can afford to have the car up on blocks for a week!!!

just remember, massive offset rims = big load on your wheel bearings.
