Spring pack has moved on LHS front 95 dual cab hilux Ln106

Post by trains »

Hi chaps.

after getting a wheel balance done, I noticed that the LHs front has a knock when turning right when its loaded up.

Had a look, and the 2nd longest leaf has moved sideways, over at the front of the spring, but more so at the rear and is fouling the rear shackle when under load, and causing the knock.

I thought I would ask here and see if that is indicative of a spring about to finally give up, (there 10 years old) or is it just co incidence, and taking the weight off, and moving them back lined up will be fine.

Over the years ive not come across leaves moving like this.

Cheers

Check the leaf clamp's are tight around the leaves, check U-bolts are tight, check center bolt is'nt broken .Hilux front springs never have much camber and seem to work fairly hard, look at the end of each leaf and see if its wearing in to the leaf above it,they are start saving up for some others. If there not, loosen u-bolts,get big hammer,re-align shifted spring,do up u-bolts ,then put away tools and have a beer.

the noise will be mainly heard after it been raining too/ lou der

u need to jack up the car

take the wieght off the spings

split each leaf apart using a flat blade screwdrive n hammer

then smear some grease between the end of the leaves / plastic pads if fitted

do all 4 corners like this fnr of each spring

it gives a smoother ride as the springs are allowed to slide/move againts each other , rather than binding up

Hi chaps, yep the springs have worn into each other by a mm or 2.

Will take weight off vehicle and take off u bolts, and check center bolt.
One of the spring clamps/ wraps has become quite loose too.

The noise is the 2nd leaf, having moved so far over to one side, ie 10mm that it binds up on the rear shackle, and then pops off, and thus creates the noise.

Its also become quite nervous on the road, like a tierod end or bearings are loose, but the front end is very tight.

Well, as per the above advice, I got into it.

I brushed the u bolts the night before with a wire brush to clean them, and then brushed them with kero and let them soak.

They came undone easily the next day, so once the u bolts were loosened I put the jack under the chassis, and took the weight off the springs.

I inspected the center bolt, and its ok, I then put some clamps on the springs, and with a large set of multi grips, I was able to re align the offending leaf, and make sure the rest were fine. I was not able to close up the spring wrap tho.

Lowered the chassis and then took u bolts out, cleaned them with wire brush, lightly oiled the threads, and refitted them after giving every thing else a quick brush too.

Noise gone, and it drives a bit better too.

It must have been one of those things that just happened which co incided with the tyre balance.

Yeah it could be the bushes.
Do you have poly or rubber? Poly are well known for being squekey biatches.
Could also be leaves rubbing on the spring clamps especially the big one that comes off the overload leaf. The overload leaf often skews to the side just enough for the clamp to rub on the other leaves on one side.
Some spring makers put little anti squeek plastic bushes on the clamps.

Now when you instaled the bushes what surfaces did you grease went to a nolathaine Training night "mild piss up and feed  " they said they can/will squeak if the outer surface (spring mating surface) is greasesd and it was said that you only grease the bit that comes into contact with the fixed pin and the outer ends of the bush (spring perch cotact area) hope this help after a few years of greasing all of it now i'm enlightend :D
