hi all,
im a fairly new member reffered here from 4wd monthly forums,
went to supercheap today to get transmission oil to do a complete change because gear box is a lil crunchy and stiff, he sold me a big 4ltr drum (the same sort of size as engine oil) and said just use a funnel,
well i got home and had a look and there is no way that bottle is going anywere near the top up hole there is no were near the space, and then to try and fit a funnel aswell? WTF?
has anyone done this before?
any suggestions?

Take the funnel and the drum back to him, and use it to wipe the stupid look from his face
Then, get a cheap pumpy thingy from in there ($25 i think) to pump it outta the bottle and into the box. Make sure he sold u the right oil too
Failing that, some of the smaller bottles (2L i think) have their own porer, but that takes ages and is very uncomfortable.60 + Turbo, 33"s :armsup:
Instead of spending so much on a pump, go to a Caltex servo or distributor, and buy a $4 plastic pump used to pump hand cleaner out of the 4 litre cans. Add a bit of plastic tubing, and bobs your uncle.
NOW FOR THE WORD OF WARNING.
If this is a Aussie Rocky (F70/75/80/85 ect) you are changing the oil in, MAKE SURE YOU UNDO THE CORRECT FILLER PLUG. Look on the DRIVERS side of the gearbox. Half way up, you will see the filler plug. It is 24mm, the same size as the drain, and the same size as the similar plug on the passenger side that YOU DONT WANT TO UNDO. Undoing this plug, which should have an aluminium locking washer on it, drops the reverse pivot into the box, and you have no reverse. The fix is a PITA box top removal, or complete box removal.

Mud makes excellent toothpaste.
I use a funnel and about 1m length of hose.
Feed the hose down through the engine bay and poke it into the gearbox filler hole, slowly fill up the funnel and let the oil flow down the hose into the trans, when the trans is full to the hole you're done.
Buy some decent oil, otherwise you're wasting your time and money.
From memory it only takes 1.8l for the gearbox, so even expensive oil doesn't cost that much compared to filling something like a Patrol gearbox...

It is actually(i think), atleast on the transfer, not sure about the gbox. There's a cover thingy where the stick goes in. If a fresh change doesn't help at all.... you can use Nulon Geabox and Diff additive to help with the smoothness... You add it to the normal oil.
If that fails, try Redline Shockproof... quite dear though. ~$100?

Redline Shockproof Lightweight- I was using it in my box for over three years (until I decided it was time to pay out for a rebuild.) Cured cold shift grating and quietened it right down. Improved the shift action markedly too.
