Timing a 2L engine (how do I?)

Post by Bad JuJu »

Hi all,
Ive searched and no useful results - dumbdunce & bubs sent responses in email

I have a mate that has tried to replace a timing belt on a 2l engine and now the engine won't fire at all.
It seems to be exausting into the inlet manifold?

I would the procedure to set the timing again - cam, injector pump and crank.

Thanks All

PS any other ideas other than timing on this are also appreciated.

Was it running all right before hand?
Was the belt changed because it was due or for some other reason?
The dot stamped in the cam pulley is at 3 o'clock ,the inj' pump and crank alignment marks are at 12 o'clock.
The inj' pump pulley never want's to sit on mark so line it up and use a 12mm headed bolt through threaded pulley spoke hole to lock it.
Did one yesterday and have done hundreds before ,and replacing the belt does not turn the idiot light off on the dash.Thereis a rubber gromet in the clear plastic cover of the dash that you remove and a small button on face of gauge that you push and light goes out.

Thanks for that, they were just changing a timing belt.
Which they did - aligned everything like suggested.
Now it wont start and yeah it seems like air is coming out the inlet while cranking it like the inlet valves are not shutting on the compression stroke - though im not there to confirm.

:?

Any advice is appreciated.

Just changing a timing belt should'nt suddenly cause motor not to start if it was running ok,were the timing marks aligned before removing old belt or for some reason has the cam ended up out of time? If in doubt remove rocker cover, align timing marks, and check that front rockers are both tight,if not are rear rockers both tight? If one pair or the other are'nt both tight the cam timing is out. There was one model 2L that had a cam timing mark at 12 o'clock on the rocker cover , pretty rare but out there.
Cheers.
