Disco with nissan diffs?

Post by mroffroader »

Hey all im looking at putting bigger diffs in my disco (its got 10 spine diffs) i am looking at the option of nissan safari/partol diffs as they are reasonable cheap to buy and they have good ratio's and cheap LSD's/lockers has any one done this conversion and could tell me about any problems they experienced or have a link to a write up thread for someone that has done it??

cheers

Doing a disco is the same as doing an old Rangie.
The front is virtually a bolt in, you only need to shorten the steering arm and lengthen the panhard rod (or vice versa can't remember).
The rear is harder with the mounts requiring cutting off and new ones located.
Mine only took a day and a carton of piss to fit. :drinking:

I personally wouldnt do it as my disco is mostly stock but if you are going hardcore and want to run 35"s or larger the stock axles will be like licorice.
Hilux centre conversion is neat and you keep the stock brakes/wheels etc.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

One of his bloody smart mates has helped him decide to fit cruiser diffs. although this involves custom shafts, and the butchering of 2 housings(to make one), hes managed to pick up a set of 40 series diffs and housings for next to nothing(literally). The plan is to shave the cruiser part of teh housing at the same time.

True....we can agree to disagree on this I'm a little bit guilty cause we have Nissan CVs in ours :P

But if I had to go to that extent to get strength, I would just buy the Nissan and forget about stuffing around swapping diffs etc and worrying about engineering, unsprung weight etc

Rovers are so cheap you can afford to get the best and just stuff it in, eg., JacMac axles, CV swaps, Peg the diff and Ashcroft RnPs. So in fact there are many choices and the UK is not sooo far away anymore.

Oh and rims and tyres are easy to find to fit perhaps a little more expensive than Nissanyota, but they are out there no problems at all - see the Disco on 35s thread.

I was just offered a front nissan diff for very cheap so i think i may take that and stick it under and put the cruizer pumpkin/diff head in the rear. the reason for doing the whole cruizer thing is becuase it is cheap. i got the cruizer diffs for free and turoa's doing all the work as i dont have the time or skill (mainly the skill!! ;) ) and another local guy is making the coustom axles which he garantees you wont break (which are also very reasonably priced) but if i get the nissan front it means alot less work etc and much stronger cv's etc......engineering???? haha you gota be kidding me as long as it looks ok then i will be road legal. my truck in its current state has 2" body lift 2" suspension lift and 33" simexs...blah blah blah and its totally road legal....it all depends on who you go to to get your warrent of fitness ;)

Call bull shit all you want. if you couldn't tell ya diff was bent before you mounted it, then perhaps you should be looking at go karts. :finger:
There was only about 15 to 20mm difference.
That is not enough to worry about. Mine have been in my car for 2.5 years and work fine.

If you only fit the Toyota centre in the rear and the complet Nissan diff in the front are you planning on carrying 2 spares?

Okay okay.....

Im going with these options becuase it is cheap (im only 15 and as most of my age have no money, I just wrecked a Suzuki SJ413 to fund my bigger diff project  ). I got the cruiser diffs for free and im getting a nissan front for $300 which is very cheap. So if I do nissan front that is less work in the front and it will be stronger eg. bigger brakes bigger CV's etc.

In the rear I will do the cruiser centre purely because its cheap and easy. It will have custom axles which the guy garantees you wont break.

Cooter I will PM you now I would love some pics of your front diff conversion and any other info you may have for me :D

Why? The nissan front would be very hard to break (maybe carry a cv or 2)

It should have similar strength (or more) to an 80 series rear, and nissan front.

OOps I thought you meant spare parts

I have seen places where you can get stud adapters made, so 5-6stud or 6-5 stud.

And whats wrong with shoving another spare in the back

A 40 series diff centre will not fit a rover housing.

To fit a rover housing, you will need an 8" toy diff centre (hilux, surf etc).
