Cleaning hot wire airflow meters...?

Post by Lucus »

Whilst the 93 is waiting for its 4.6short motor to turn up i have been going through all the ancillaries and tidying them up for refitting.

The air flow meter has quite a bit of oil built up on the engine side of it and i would like to clean it and the orifice for the hot wire.

Does any body know of a good product(solvent) for this that wont damage the hotwire? I found a product on and American site but cant find any such thing here in AUS

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Not sure if it is the same EFI system, but you should have a look at www.rangie.com. There is a very detailed description about cleaning the MAF sensor in articles on the LHS of the main page.

cheers, DL

That's strange. Across the ditch I saw a ad for it about 3 months ago. I can't remember who was selling it though.

I pulled the one out of my donor vehicle and put it into my daily driver. It had been in a rollover and was full of oil. Wiyhout thinking too much about it I cleaned out most of the oil and then gave it a good clean with some petrol.
Works like a new one

You can get a residue free electronics cleaner from Jaycar.

I have used it successfully.

I doubt petrol would be suitable.

Just poured a little in where the little sensor things are let it soak for a bit, wiped the main part of it with petrol on a rag.
Before I did this the engine wouldn't even idle, after the quick clean with petrol she runs like new.
Now I realise the difference is that before it was oily, and after it wasn't. My point is, it worked.

You do not want residue on the sensor wires as the ECU compares the voltage needed to heat one wire vs the other wire.

Anything like petrol or Inox will leave a reside which will affect the reading.

Maybe not much. maybe its 70 % maybe 95 % accurate, with residue on it. And the Hitachi MAF on a 14CUX is very unusual in that it does not have a burn off cycle which gets rid of residue.
However the no residue cleaner will not leave residue so will give the greatest accuracy.
Its pretty simple to go to Jaycar and spend $15 on No residue electronic cleaner, and then you know its clean.

this stuff is probably close to ideal - have used it before, it evaporates very quick.
