How to work out towing capacity on older cars?

I am looking at a 76 F250 as a tow car. How do you work out the towing capacity? there are no placards on it. thanks

I am pretty sure the tow capacity is based on the wheght of the vehicle and the strenght of the tow bar set up, I sure if you do a few specific google searched you will find a formula, other than that try tow mobs that run the old ftruck tow set ups??

I have a 76 F250 4X4.
Rego papers show - tare mass 2340kg
- Gross Vehicle Mass 3493kg
- Gross Combined Mass 4700kg

So if your truck is empty and near Tare weight you can tow 4700 - 2340 = 2360kg
Obviously, as you add weight to your truck your towing capacity will reduce

The only spec anyone is going to care about is a manufacturers spec, although the hayman reece spec is probably a very good guide as i have yet to see a hayman reece towbar rated above the vehicles maximum.

Have a look at any GQ hayman reece bar. Mine is rated to 3500kg's. The car is only rated to 2500kg's.....

ok i stand corrected :S

I would try ford. If you get someone reasonable enough they should be able to pull up specs on any vehicle.

i did't either but may be you can work it out of the GVM

there is something in the QLD Transport literature somewhere that says in the absence of a manufacturers spec you can base it on the GVM. Ill have a look through these mod booklets ive got.
