Aftermarket Turbo
Can anyone please tell if it is worth buying a 1998 std 4.2L diesel 100 series (cheaper) and installing an aftermarket Turbo & intercooler to it for greater power & efficiency or is it too much of a risk. Should I save up and by the factory 4.2L TD. I am looking for the power and efficiency of a 4.2TD but at a cheaper cost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What cost am I looking at to install one? Also can you install one to an 80 series with great success with Power, efficiency (12l/100) and reliability. I really do not want to spend more than $30K.

Std 100 series diesel comes with a solid front end, which is better for offroading. Factory TD has an independent front end, which is weaker, and harder to lift than solid axle.
It doesnt really matter what you do to a 1hz in a 100series, it just wont go or have as much potential as the 1hdfte. You can get close to the power output with turbo/intercooler, but you wont get the same efficiency, although 12l/100km is achievable. The major issue with the std diesel is it has a weaker gearbox, that has a habit of spitting the dummy when towing or having a turbo bolted in front of it. As far as I am aware, it is a modified bundera box. The factory td has a much stronger box.
I have also heard that some people have had issues with aftermarket turboes on the 100s cracking pistons from excessive heat etc, which wasnt a problem on the 80 series 1hz.
The 80 series on the other hand works very well with aftermarket turbo and intercooler as it is solid front axel, has the stronger gearbox on the 1hz and doesnt have the heating isssues that the 100series has. It is also significantly lighter than the 100s which adds to the ability to get better fuel economy.
Aftermarket turbo will set u back about 3.5k in a shop in either 100s or 80s, and the intercooler can set you back anywhere between 1.5k-3k in top.
If I were you, i would wait to get a good factory turbo 100 (nice to drive) or get a factory multivalve turbo 80 series (1hdf-t). They have good output without all the electronics. Wack an intercooler on one of them, and you wont be disappointed with the power or the economy and you should be able to do it for under 30k all up.

Thanks for the replies.
I have heard that you are okay with the post 95 models. There has only been a few isolated cases with the hdft having big end bearing problems.
What sort of Kms are ya generally looking at for a say 97/98 hdft factory turbo? I am guessing anything over 300 to leave alone.

I have a HZJ105 w/ turbo. Goes well, but not as well as factory Turbo and not as good a fuel economy. The factory turbo is a WONDERFUL motor, very clean on oil. The 1HZ is OK.
I plan to intercool mine to get a little more out of it. It's "acceptable" but not brilliant, and I average 14l/100 atm.
Mine is an Auto, so no gearbox weakness, but Auto GXL in HXJ105 are like hens teeth.
So why this path - well on poor roads / off road all is answered. The live axle is much better. The front diff is stronger and suspension easier to setup for off-road behaviour.
