hi looking to buy gq patrol need some advice on pet-gas over turbo diesel both 5sp, its one or the other just a few pro an cons with both motors would b good, the 91 4.2 pet-gas done 225k motor bit noisy (tappets) needs a tidy up 2inch lift other than that pretty standard but a good thing an 95 4.2 td at 330k rebuilt motor an turbo about 120k ago 4in dobsin kit new 33's been painted 6 months ago custom rear bar and its been USED( guy told me about panel damage etc) its a st-l ithink elec windows,mirrors,etc any advise would be great thanks guys mick

I've got 3x turbo 4.2 deisels n a 4.2 petrol carby gqs n I prefer the tds over the petrol, TDs drive better more responsive down low, they will idle over terrain where petrol wants to run at 1500rpm deisel will do 800rpm, I get 5km/l on petrol driving easy n at least 9 km/l driving deisel hard, petrols are prone to crack heads deisels have few problems

get the 1 on gas sell the 4.2 petrol motor $500 -$1000 and throw in a new small block 350 chev ($3000 crate motor $2000 fitting) then you have spent what you would have buying the turbo diesel it'll go better with a v8 and cost nothing (/ a lot less) to repair if needed engine wise
thats my 2 cents worth and what i'm doing exept mine will be a 383 stroker or big block i have a good small block suit rebuild for sale still good standed bore if you like that idea.

i had td cab chassis and now own 4.2 pet/gas wagon go deisel im kickn myself for not buyn deisel but im now goin to put 5.0lt efi in wagon with the gas set up on it so for now i say deisel but stay tuned lol
You need to work out if your going do most of your driving touring or bashing . if i was touring with the occasional bash id go TD, however if i was just being a weekendwarrior id go TB cause they are cheaper to run and they love sitting on the limiter most the time
reliability vs economy, both good motors really, ive owned both and you need to spend a heap on the TD to get it too move where the TB stock with a snorkel and a flowed exhaust still turn 35" enuf to drive it.

Well can't say for TD but i have got myself a NA 4.2L Diesel after writing my 1990 Pet-Gas Mav off.
So far no regrets over the Diesel setup, with a Turbo i recon she would go even harder, mine lacks some speed up hills, but Turbo makes a huge diff to that.
So mark me down as one for the Diesel Crowd

Go the diesel you'll be happier in the long run, especially since the motor has been rebuilt

Hi guy thaks for all the advice i want a turbo d i really do but such a price diff like 7000$ the turo d is at 12000 and pet gas 5000$ what do ya think now ? could allways do motor swap down the track (V8) i could spend the 7000 diff and turn the pet gas wild with lcokers lift and v8 for that then it would put a td to sleep haha only a thought. looking to sell swap my 99gsxr 750 or fj45 lwb v8 308 fiberglass front for a gq any intrest please pm mick

It shat all over my bro-in-laws lwb diesel ute around town (driver wise)
If a heavy right foot was needed the petrol had the rev's to get outa trouble.
but...
long steep rutty hills were traction wasnt an issue
anything towing wise
and freeway wise the diesel was much nicer.
