1. whats the difference between sierra coily diffs and normal wide track diffs other then the obvious mounts will they go on narrow track springs or will the punkin be in the way ???
2. I know a coily has a high pinion center are they interchanable with the earlier models??
3. are the flanges the same as the earlier 1.3ltr ones

Yeah 1 ltr size, but you cant just change em for 1.3 cuz the stub is different, i think this is the only real weak point, the centre is 1.3 size.Rhett wrote:Havent they got a smaller cv? Not a 100% sure so someone correct me if wrong.

ok this myth keeps popping up..
coily cvs are not the same size as 1lt. they are the same as 1.3nt and yes before you say it they are different to wt sierra.sj80 do run the same shaft spline count and are the same size (but longer) than a 1.3 nt but the same size (but longer again)in the rear as a wt.
as sam said you can fit the jimny airlocker into the coily housing but when it comes down to it no there is not a air locker available for the coily.
the rear lsd from a jimny goes strait into the rear of a coily.
one question i would like to ask and never have in these "coily diffs are weaker than wt" is this...
how many of you saying they are weaker have actually owned a coily or actually messed around with interchanging different diff parts?
no im not talking my mates cv blew and we swapped it but it was not the same so it must be weaker. im talking actually taking time to measure, swap, interchange over a few years with many different diffs. just a question no harm meant..
ps i know of a hell of a lot more nt and wt blowing every part of diffs compaired to a sj80, yes there is some contributing factors to this but work out the ratios of nt/wt to sj80 then wheeling to wheeling and you might change your mind as to what is weaker.

as for the conversion i have put it in the to hard basket for the time being as its a love job for a mate who was happy with his nt diffs, i talked him around wished i didn't, anyway we put the rear in, but sticking with finding a wt for the front, for simplicity.
Every thing is different and i dont have the time to nut it out.
problems.
1. on the coily diff i have it does not have any brakes or center and i was going to pinch some them a 1.3 nt, but the brake calipar bolts to the swivle hubs on the coily, the stub axels are different lenths and the circlip is at the bottom of shaft rather than end near hub locks the stub axle sleeve flange i had didn't fit in the swivle hub different insert diameter nothing matched all back to front. Ive have talked to others who are planning the same thing who suggested you have to seperat the cv puting a 1.3 nt stub shaft in its place then use 1.3 nt swivle hubs brakes etc.. alot of work for ??
(with coily brakes its 30mm wider with 1.3lt nt brakes you could bump that up to maybe 30-40mm making it the SAME as HILUX)
2. the steering on a coily runs a rear drag link with a hi pinion center, the front drag link runs from box to left hand swivel, then rear draglink to right hand side problem is it hits the springs, as i was going to use to a low pinion center and go back to normal streering that wasn't going to be a problem. the problem it that the steering arms are not long enough from a wt so either a conversion to hilux or similar if your running 1.3 nt hubs, OR if you run with the coily brakes swivle hubs etc.. then you can use a low pinion center and retapper the drag link holes and run the drag link over the top of the center out of the way as long as you have enough lift as to not bottom it on your rails
MY conclusion
i havn't enough parts to mix and match and at the end of the day hilux is way stronger and simpler cheaper.

any one want a coily diff stripped from all it mounts, all steering arms swivles hubs cv hub locks etc.. just no center, discs or calipar's.

I BELIEVE OTHER THAN THE HOUSING BOLT PATTERN THE HIGH PINION CENTER IS UNIQUE, AS FAR AS INTERNALS ARE CONSERNED.
SO A 1.3LT LOW PINION CENTER WILL GO IN BUT THE ANGLE OF THE TAIL SHAFT WOULD BE A REAL ISSUE AS WELL AS THE REAR DRAG LINK BEING IN THE WAY.
IF YOU RAN A DOUBLE CARDENAL ON THE SHAFT, THE LOW PINION AND CHANGED YOUR DRAG LINK TO RUN OVER THE CENTER RATHER THAN UNDER IT MAY WORK

Its the LSD an easy swap? Anyone done it? how would you rate it? obviously a locker or welded would be best, but to keep things sensible is this a good option?

LSD 's brake to easy go a locker welded even if money is an issue
any way arent the rear of a coily interchanable with 1.3ltr leaf diffs i didnt check as i fitted the hole diff in my conversion.
but note i had to move diff back 30mm to take presure of slip joint on tail shaft so it would'nt push against transfer case etc... so saying that maybe the coily is a little longer center but i think still interchanable
