Planning to build a rock crawling buggy, but on the cheap side (if that exists). Wanted some nice wide axles, thinking modified hilux gear.
On many 4x4's the the diff is ofset to one side of the axle assembly, with a long axle on one side of the diff and a shorter axle on the other. I thought it might be worth a try getting a spare longer axle, and extending the short end of the diff housing so there was a longer axle on each side of the diff.
In theory it should work, as long as the welds are strong enough, and the housing is beefed up with some reinforcing. Other thing is the axle might end up too long.
If anyone has done this or at least thinks it might work would appreciate the feedback

Diff housing extension for wider axles

Re: Diff housing extension for wider axles
I did this using a hilux axle and a bundera long side axle. Made a diff the was the same width as a 80 with a 8" center. I thought i was clever until Richo told me that it was the same width as an 05 hilux axlebushy wrote:Planning to build a rock crawling buggy, but on the cheap side (if that exists). How wide you talkin ifs rear with fliped 15/6x10's should be heaps and for the front run a disc spacer then a wheel spacer on the fliped rim's aswell or get some custom spacers made up that way if you do a axle you don't have to frig aroung getting one made up or forever chasing long side axles and custom steering arms
plenty of parts on the bench
After a bit of research, the long axle in a lux axle is 31" 15/32 and the shorter is 15" 5/16. I figure i can get the difference in extension. a whopping 16" 5/32.
16" is massive. correct me if im wrong, and i often am, i dont think you would get that much extension with wheel spacers and flipped rims. Although this is a good option too.
Another advantage is only needing one spare axle rather than a shorter and longer one.
