Buying a second hand warn

Post by juls »

What should I look for when inspecting a second hand warn winch?

Can you take it apart to check if its been drenched and corroded inside?

Defintely. Go to the warn website and download the expanded view of the internals to make it easier to put back together.

When I bought my Winch, i didn't know it at the time but the motor was screwed because it was mounted on a jeep and jeeps mount upside down which meant that drain holes for electric motor was on top (easiy to fix just rotate motor around gearbox to right way)....water goes in and stay in....rusted internals and second time I cranked it over it shorted out and died.

i just pulled the whole thing apart soaked the internals in diesel to clean it up and regreased everything with molybdenum? grease and put it back together with a new warn motor. Make sure to run your winch for a fwe minutes at the end of the day to dry out the internals so it doesn't rust.

I've heard of guys sealing up the whole unit and running a breather off the motor housing....pretty easy to do i reckon....

How hard is it to inspect the internals of a winch when i go to look at the winch before i buy it.

If im spending 8 or 900 on a 2nd hand winch i want to make sure the motor wont die like dank experienced.

If winch is seperate from bullbar is not hard.
Remove two bolts from end of motor and remove cover.
Rusty=shit.
Clean,tidy=good.
Don't think the owner will apreciate pulling apart his winch , especially if something breaks.
Save up and buy a new one instead. :)

If the seller wont let you at least take an end cap off to view, its most likely stuffed - walk away.
