Circlip on GQ axel
Circlip on GQ axel
The circlip that you take off after removeing the manual hub on the end of the C.V. stub axel, do you really need it.?
Cause I'll be farked if I can even get enough grove visible let alone get it to sit in it.
I had a fair bit of trouble getting it back on when I replaced the last C.V and all I did this time was take it apart and put some fresh grease in and I just wont come even close enough to try putting it back on.
I have had it apart and I don't have too much grease in bearings or mateing surfaces so I am at a loss.
Without it the axel-c.v. assembly can move in and out a bit, will it matter? Will this let the toothed cone engage on the manual hub because there is nothing holding it back?

i would keep trying, you may have issues at full lock if you dont put it back on. i can usually manage to get them back on. before you put the hug gear on pull the CV out as far as possible, then very gently slide the gear back on. i can usually pry it out the last bit with a small flat screw driver. they can be a PITA, just walk away, have a beer and then try again half hour later
Yep. i had a couple of rums and it still didn't help.Madmac wrote:i would keep trying, you may have issues at full lock if you dont put it back on. i can usually manage to get them back on. before you put the hug gear on pull the CV out as far as possible, then very gently slide the gear back on. i can usually pry it out the last bit with a small flat screw driver. they can be a PITA, just walk away, have a beer and then try again half hour later
I,ve definately done something wrong as I have done this numerous times before. I didn't even take the plate off that lets you take the CV out.
I think I will get a new set of seals for it tommorow and have another go at it. Wont hurt it so long as it doesn't get put into 4wd.

I did them up probably tighter than what I would normally.CruiserPatrol wrote:I have had this problem and i found that i needed to nip the bearing up a little more. That gave me a little more stub axle sticking out. It's a shame they didn't put a thead in it like the cruiser ones.

thinking I may have damaged the inner seal. Maybe the ring in the seal has come a adrift and is stopping the hub from going all the way back in.
I can't even see the groove when pulling the axel outwards witt the clutch gear on..

Definately keep trying.
If it's not there, I think the point where the CV pivots will not be in line with the pivot of the king pins.
You may have got an air lock in the bearings and assembly with the grease. Pull it apart and re-assemble to double check everything is in correctly. I sometime use some multigrips to pull the stub axle out fully.

Didn't change the CVs, didn't even take them out. Just was doing a bearing grease top up. Its been in there before. I am now pretty sure it can only be the inner seal holding it back.killer_garden_gnome wrote:i dunno if i miss read but if u are changin cv's u might have trouble if its aftermarket, there was a topic on here a while back about the clips not fitting on non genuine cv's
I spun the hub heaps of times to get the grease to spead.

did this on saturday. Its a snack! Don't bother trying to keep the cv out and then slip the spline over it. make sure it will come out, then place the spline over it. get a set of multigrips and pull the cv out. use a decent set of flat circlip pliers and clip it on. Maybe get another set of hands to hold the axle out. Also there is 2 grooves. the clip goes on the outer one on manual hubs and on both on auto ones.

Mate know how u feel!!!
I was having the same problem found out to be the seal near the thrust washer (not sure of the real name but you have the inner axel seal then another one that goes on next near the thrush washer, hey just going on memory!!) got that sitting flush again and was able to finsih
but hey it took me a couple of beers and two walk aways to fix it

DONE.
Looks like I had somehow damaged the inner bearing seal. The metal ring in the seal had come away and with my spinning of the hub had wrapped itself around and around stopping the hub from sitting correctly.
I'm glad I didn't drive it.
Thanks for the help anyway.

Yes it needs to be on there! Its to stop end float in the shaft and there is even a tolerance noted in the service manual ie: replace circlip if dimension exceeds ??? (I cant remember).
What I did when I overhauled my swivel hubs was I put the circlip on the shaft 1st then grabbed the end of the shaft tight with multipliers and pulled the shaft towards me then fed the circlip into the groove with circlip pliers. Had to pull the shaft pretty hard (that sounds good lol) to get the groove clear of the stub spindle.
cheers
