buggy tailshaft

hey now have just got my buggy and there was a very big noise when i got off the gas now have found that it was my front tailshaft
now it goes out of the t/case and has a centre bearing 2get it around the motor. it cant be moved

can i get sum different uni or sumthing 2 fix this or will i have 2 get a dobbin cv shaft????

What actually is the problem though. You can get high flex offset unis, but they vibrate.

it sounded like the shaft had mega twist but i think it just has 2 much angle 2 be normal

I've never heard a shaft that has "mega twist".

You need to explain the noise that it is making a bit better than that.

Like is it a constant squaling noise or is it a knocking noise etc etc.

You could also take a pic of the setup and also a pic of the angle the joint is at when its making the noise and post it on here.

Also, have you just brought this buggy from someone and if so, ring them and ask them if they know what it is.

Without hearing it and seeing the setup i would say it could be any of the following.

If its a clunking noise (while under power) i would say one of the unis is buggered.

If its only clunking when its flexed it would be uni bind.

If its making a really weird farked up noise when the shaft is compressed it could be that the drive shaft is bottoming out and is putting heaps of pressure on the unis.

If its a squaling noise then it could be the centre bearing itself is colapsed (or about to) or it just needs some grease.

You really need to tell us more about the buggy and what type of joints are in it now.

You can get Tom Woods uni's that with a bit of Die grinding easily handle 55 degree's.

I hope that helps. But like i said, more info would be great as i am pretty well just taking a stab in the dark.

sorry it is hard 2 explain

it is a clunking noise but only when i get of the power
all unis seem good
its not when it is flex out
the unis did bind up when it was flexed but have die grinded them out
the centre bearing is good just new

i would ask the person that made it but thing happen and we dont talk anymore so i dont know what unis are in it

I'm assuming you mean that it makes a clicking/clunking sound when you back off the throttle after accellerating?

This could be:
-The pinion angle changing in the rear due to loose heim joints or dodgy bushes

-Slip joint in the shaft

-Centre bearing, if its a hilux one with a bit of an angle on it, it won't last too long. We've almost filled the rubber in ours up with sicaflex

-Your Uni's. Take them out, go to a bearing shop, they'll be able to match them. Would be handy to have spares anyway.

-Pinion bearing could be loose/worn

-Failing above check your crown wheel.

Are you sure its just not some back lash noise coming from the T/case.

If its a buggy (so very little firewall and sitting quite close to the t/case) you will find that you hear all sorts of noises that are usually covered.

What sort of T/case is it, my LT230 rattles when i have drive between stages. Only when i back off. Its been doing that for two years and its still perfect.

Just something else to look at.

What sort of buggy is it, i figure its a front engine buggy.

Its running commy V6 and auto, rover case and 60 series diffs.

OK so it does have a Rover T/case.

Try this, drive along at a pretty decent speed. Then pop the t/case into neutral. The drive shafts will still be spinning. So if the noise is still there, its something to do with the C/bearing or uni's, if the noise stops then its the T/Case.

Try that and let us know.

thanx for the info i have pulled the buggy apart 2 give it a paint job and fix sumthing so cant test anything yet and the t/case has know gear lever has been removed

Is this the buggy Overkill was building? We realy need a good picture of how the front shaft is set up to have any idea what could be causing the problem.

Not sure if this of any use but my front uni's are pretty sad and needing replacement. They make a constant click when taking up the slop of mounds etc in the bush.

Apart from that I would suggest that it is a buggy and drive it until it fails then you will definately know

well had 2 pull the car apart 2 do the auto as it went and sum other thing so was guna fix it all up when it was apart but if i cant find it will just drive it till it blows

when i was taken the t/case out was playing with it and the front output
shaft flange moves a bit side 2 side bit lose maybe that is it??

It looks to have Cruiser Uni Joints in it. They dont go through much angle at all. The best uni to run in the front when dealing with that much angle is a Hilux slip joint end Uni and yokes. They can handle the most amount of angle of any stock set up. Or if you want a Uni that will handle even more angle look here- http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html but you will then need to convert to a Rover 1310 Yoke or similar. There is no uni in this style available for the Toyota.

You can go to hardy spicer and have any uni drilled to match whatever pattern you like. So if there is a toyota part that would suit the job, then just get them to drill to match

I'm expecting some Rover to Toyota axle shafts from Tom Woods. The 1310 uni to Toyota requires the Toy round pinion flange and then you drill to suit. The centre diameter has been matched to ensure it stays concentric with the pinion.

Micka, it's a heap cheaper to have Tom Woods make the shafts and import them than to have Hardy Spicer make them up. Over 4 shafts I have saved $1000 doing it this way, and I have better shafts.

you can buy hilux flange yokes to suit 1310 uni joints i have them in stock spicer part no: 2.2.799.1 then theres no drilling or machining just bolt on
