1.6 mpfi won't start

Post by chrissuzuki »

Hi people,

Have been putting a 1.6 mpfi motor in my sierra. And am now scratching my head with some problems.
Now the motor cranks no worries and fires on the first intial cranking but doesn't start, go to crank it agian and it just cranks won't fire at all. So I sprayed "start ya bustered" down the inlet tube and it fired and ran for a bit also tried working the throtle body while it was runnung but wouldn't idle or rev.
So I'm thinking it has something to do with the injectors but i don't know. Cause I pulled number 1 spark plug and it was damp and smelt like fuel, but i also checked to see if the injector was clicking as described in the manual but couldn't really tell if it was clicking or not. Also took the regulator valve at the return end of the fuel rail to see if there was fuel and yes there was fuel.
So does anybody know how to check if the injectors are working other than the methods in the manual?

Or does anybody have any other ideas on what could be happening?

Thanks in advance.
Chris.

OK. these are a bit picky with stuff being unplugged and unscrewed.

U must have the air sensor plugged in and also make sure u have the air intake (airbox and corsover pipe thing) plumbed up with the plastic box thing mid way also in there. i have left that out and it does not start.

apart from that make sure all little things are plugged up or in.

PM for any questions. i have been going through this with mine also.

Have you changed the fuel pump?

Yes using vitara tank(standard intank pump not new) to a surge tank to a vl fuel pump(new) to fuel rail.

I'll pull off the line to the fuel rail and see if it has good flow.

thanks cj.

fuel sounds good. i am only using a vl pump inline and a primer pump inline before vl one.

u got the check light hooked up? does it show anything at all.

also make sure all earths are on for ecu and engine. there is two manifold earths in loom and a couple ecu earths.

Yeah we put a blub on the check engine light wire and tried flashing up some codes but nothing.
I'll check those earths tomorrow .

Today I bought one of those noide lights that you plug in to the injector plugs to check if there is voltage and when i cranked the engine it flashed when it started to fire as i described before then the noide light stopped flashing and no matter how long I cranked it . But if I let it sit for a little bit then try and start it again it would flash again and then stop. So i don't no what is stopping the signal to the injectors.

Any ideas nic?

taking a guess the ecu is registering a signal not being there and stopping firing.

was it a man or auto originally? and u have all orig sensors plugged in i take it.

u can try crack the injectors so fuel should seep around and try cranking it. like a diesel bleeding.

when u hit the key to acc position does it spin the pump for a sec or two and then when cranking spin pump continuously? (fuel coming out of return line at all?

as to checking injectors - can u feel them clicking when cranking over?

I used a mate mechanics trick to eliminate fuel system is to run it on lpg. (basically regulating the gas going into the intake from a bbq bottle hose and tap), i did not need much gas and then crank and use throttle to get revs up.

have fun

*manual, yes pretty sure all plugs are in.

* yes

*I'll try a few of those things today thanks for your help nic.

Cheers Chris.
