How tough is a GQ wagon spare wheel carrier???

Hi, just put a set of 35's on my LWB GQ and i am looking for a spare 35 aswell, was just wondering if the rear barn door will cope with the extra weight, or if it should be reinforced somehow..
Any opinions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!..

i got a 33 on the rear of mine and i used to live in broken hill and hooted along the corrugations flatout nearly all day everyday in it and i never seen any signs of cracking or anything like that and i was going fast too and the bumps were pretty severe,

i i say itd be safe,
also my dads gu has a 35 on his and its all good also my mate has a 37 hanging ff his, no probs at all

I used to have a 33 on the rear of my GQ patrol door and it cracked across the door just below the windscreen which is a very common problem when fitting 33s or 35s on them.

You can fit a worn out 35 on the back as a spare but a new 35 or bigger forget about it they don't fit. :lol:

we have had 35's on our spare wheel carrier and no problems.this is over 12 monthes.and 33's for 2 years before the 35's

My spare is 33'' and the carrier has cracked through the bolt holes,i'd be reinforcing it to make sure it dont crack.

Some 35s don't actually measure 35inches and the width of the wheel can affect the overall height as well.

When you open your rear door and smash the tail light don't say you wheren't warned. ;)

I know several people who has had this happen because people have told them a new 35 inch tyre fits. It will fit but it will also smash your tail light one day.

Some of the advise on this forum is know different to saying yes you can drive your patrol on the road with an 8 inch lift and 40 inch tyres as long as you don't get caught. :roll:

36" tyre +high lift jack on the spare carrier equals cracked door. hinges are fine, but the bkt that is spot welded on the inside of the door is trying to make it's way out. entire door is rooted

It's usually caused by the weight wearing the hinges out which then causes the door to fold back to the point where it smashes the light.

If it's a later model GQ then it's less likely to happen then what it would if it's a early model but it will happen.

mine isnt cracked and has run 35's for ages. also with a brand new mtr on it it doesnt hit the tail lights. but it does lightly rub on the door around the outside due to the rim off set.
mine an 88 with big k's and has run big tyres for a long time now without an issue. that said it doesnt spend every day on corrogations and the like either.

that said i will be building a rear bar with swing away carrier some time soon tho.

A 35inch MTR doesn't measure true 35 inchs, my 37s only measure 36 new.

Mine was a 89 model and door cracked and was fixed serveral times, plus I have 2 mates who are only runnig 33s on there rear door and there both cracked.

If you use the search on this forum you will find it's a very very common problem. ;)

It must be all them trips we do to the watigons that f#ck the doors. :twisted:

I had a 35" Kumo mud on the door of my old shorty. To be able to open the door fully I just the left the tyre flat. Never had any problems then. It did hit the taillights but there wasnt enough pressure in the tyre to damage them.
Did have it like this for long though as I built a tyre carrier. But it did have a 33 on it for 200000km.

Mine had cracked all the spot welds under the rear window and it only had 33s when i bought it, 35s just made it worse.
I modified the door latch so it wouldnt open all the way and smash tail light, redrilled new hole.

I had a 35 on a 10 inch rim as my spare for a couple of years before it broke something. Mine pulled the bolts through the wheel carrier but I know of others that cracked the door skin with their 35's. They will fit by drilling new holes in your wheel carrier and moving it 10 to 20mm to the right, and it will probably last a while, but is it worth the risk? Eventually something will fatigue and crack.
