it would be squeesing it to be honest, a 1.3l sierra block is approx 70cm long, my mazda 1.6 is approx 75cm and from what i know the 1.8l is suppose to be 5 or so cm longer than the 1.6l.

Cheap as the motor might be the gearbox would have to come from a early model 1.6l mx5 (not to mention the dizzy and water piping)
Custom extractors would need fabbing too!

Also the thermo fan may not be able to be set up behind the radiator so cooling would need addressing, peharps an oil cooler?

i love the mazda B family engines i'd say translpanting everthing from a wrecked 1.6l rwd mx5 would be way easier than adapting the more common fwd 1.8l

(oh and the block is cast iron, not alloy)

i agree. i looked at the mx5 option. 1.6lt twin cam, injected, rearwheel drive and there are many performance parts out there. just jap at Moorebank in sydney has the complete conversion (motor- all bolt ons, box, wiring and computer) and was willing to throw in other things like cross members ect.. for the total of $1200 bucks which i thought was pretty good.
