GU Front hub Problem

Post by GUDamo »

Hi, I Have a couple of questions regarding front hubs & factory lockers.

Was up the coast on the weekend & my front RHS auto locking hub went BANG.... I usally lock them in manualy when out in the bush but I was on the beach so I didnt bother. Just left them in auto. I was in same deep soft sand & the RHS hub was going BANG every 10sec.

I still have 2.5yrs left of warranty & was wondering if there was any chance of getting the hubs fixed through Nissan. I have a front ARB locker & running 35's. I can put standard rubber back under it but dont know how i will go with a front locker for warranty???

Q 1 : Do Nissan's come out with a factory front locker???

Q 2 : Do GQ front hubs fit GU's???

Q 3 : Or do I just go & buy manually ones now? I can get a pair of GU ones from wreckers for $220. Does anyone have any & want to get rid of them???

Any suggestions would be great

Thanks Damo................

Mate if you can get a pair of GU manual locking hubs for that price I would just get em anyway. Even if you are sucessful with a warranty claim you will get sick of replacing fucking around with em and swap em over anyway.

Nissan auto hubs are a nice idea on paper but they generally suck especially with bigger tyres and lockers.

gq and gu manual hubs are the same. i put manual hubs on my gu after blowing an auto and haven't looked back. $200 is the usual price in sydney if you can get hold of them.
No factory front locker that i have ever heard of.
you would be dam lucky to get them to do them under warranty if you have a locker

just get the manual hubs from a DX or gq, auto hubs are crap

or if you are lucky u could try to go for a waranty claim and convince the bloke to put manual hubs in instead of the auto ones? might work :?

Thanks for the suggestions, I got it booked in next week at Nissan just to try my luck. If for some chance they do!!! I will see if they will put manual ones on instead as j-top paj suggested. If not then I will go & get the manual ones & fit them myself.

Thanks again guys....................

GUJohnno had the same problem with an 03 GU. Nissan replaced one side but that didnt fix it so the other side was replaced and all was ok. All work conducted under waranty.

He did not have a locker and replaced the rubber with 285's before putting it into the dealer though.

It took a lot of talking and a fair bit of hassle but they came through in the end. No way would they have done it if they saw it with the 35"s on.
The manual hub are far better, but being under warrenty, may as well give it a go.
They wouldn't exchange them for the manual ones under warrenty as it was a modification.... pretty funny if you knew what I had done to mine.

Hey,

Just an update on the Hub problem to anyone that is interested. I changed my tyres from 35muds to my brother inlaw's stock GU4 rim/tyres & took it to nissan to try my luck. I put a towel over my centre console just to cover the obvious. (Locker Buttons) They called the next day & to my surprise they replaced the hubs & also replaced the transfer case oil. As they said the wrong oil in the transfer case can lock the hubs in on the highway when the transfer is in 2wd. Little did they know that I have a set of Rock Hopper gears in there aswell.

I went & picked it up no questions asked, all under warranty. Even with about 2foot gap between the tyre & wheel arch. So just goes to show that there's no harm in trying, & can be lucky sometimes. I will eventually get around to changing them to genuine manual hubs one day. I looked at the paper work & the hubs were $600 each plus labor.

So I dont know how they didnt pickup on the front locker or if they just didnt care. I wasn't going to ask any questions.
Thanks all, for the replys.......

Let me know if anyone wants to sell one of their "Auto Hubs" as i know a guy after one. He bought it with one of each on and prefers to keep the auto hubs over the manuals.

Cheers....................Pete! :)
