1) All 2.8L Diesel were Turbo charged, they came with a Garret T25 Water cooled turbo

the GU RD28 has an electronic injector pump rather than mechanical, this allows them to be chipped for more power.

a GU head will fit a GQ motor

In europe, a Nissan 2wd sedan called Laurel came from the factory with a N/A RD28.

The RD28 was first developed for the Laurel passenger car and then went into the MQ/MK as the successor for the SD33/T.
While all Patrols with the RD28 sold in Germany and northern Europe where RD28T's with the turbo fitted, there was also the RD28 n/a non-turbo avail. in southern Europe with something like 66KW. There was also a 4-cyl 2.8 avail in southern Europe (A4.28T).
The RD28T went into the GQ with a re-designed head (from '92 on) and finally into the GU with all the electronics stuff. Newer head version fits old bottom ends, other way round shouldn't be done because of smaller oil channels in the older heads.

The heads are identical

there is no difference between GQ and GU motor, just the pump is different

in Australia the RD28T first made its appearance in 1995 in the GQ patrol to replace the 3.0L petrol motor, which saw the end of its life in 1994.

In Australia the last motor to go in the MQ/MK was teh SD33T. This car and its motor saw the end of its life in Australia in 1987 when the GQ patrol made its way to market, it come with either a 3.0L petrol RB30 motor (the same from the Skyline and VL Commodore), 4.2L Petrol TB42 motor or a 4.2L TD42 NA Diesel.

All RD28's in Australia came Turbocharged in 6 Cylinder only. Both GU and GQ motors use the exact same head and block, just a different pump that allows for tweaking on the GU

The last MK/MQ here in Europe was build 2002 with the TD27 slug.

There is one major differance between the heads, GQ has screw adjusters for valve clearances, while the GU has bucket & shims. I don't know if this will effect interchangability (Gee thats a big word) or not.
