3l diesel. changed my injectors today and... HELP!
so changed my injectors over today and i was very careful not to drop anything into the head and i made sure everything was done to the right torque specs
took it for a drive and it semmed to be blowing less smoke and go a bit harder.
so i pulled over into the gravel, did a nice u turn and gave it a bit and then the death rattle started!
pullled over again and checked over everthing and it was running rough and sounding like a bomb when you rev it a bit or more.
so thought fuckit best i drive home (about 10 min) and work it out.
it was very loud driving along so i tryed to take it easy then when i was almost home it stopped! (the noise not the car)
went home and checked over it again yes its got oil, water etc. so went for a drive again and now it seems fine????????????
maybe i pretend nothing happend

Re: 3l diesel. changed my injectors today and... HELP!
could have been a noisy injector that has fixed itself, ie, was sticking open or something.ClintzLux wrote:so changed my injectors over today and i was very careful not to drop anything into the head and i made sure everything was done to the right torque specs

if it does it again, grab the fuel line to each injector(near the injector) and you will feel the noisy injector if it is indeed the injector causing the problem.
Unfortunately without hearing the nouise, it really could be anything, could be a bit of piston broken free getting smashed into your head, sometimes it stops banging because the bit has been smashed into the head or piston and doesnt bang anymore.

engine noise
Engine noise..... What engine noise? R A C Q........
just spoke to my mate at eltham motors and yep, more than likely air in the system especillay since i had just given it a bit.4runner2.8 wrote:my guess it would have had air in the system, worked its way through and would have missed and carryed on making it sound like banging.
also smoke wont clear up for a few days and as far as economy is concerned ill just have to wait till i fill up next
thanks for all your help team!!!

Why wouldn't the smoke clear up strait away ? If the previous injectors were not atomising properly you would get smoke .. The new ones should be perfect out of the box. The combustion chambers take a little time to de soot, for want of a better word.love_mud wrote:Why wouldn't the smoke clear up strait away ? When you produce smoke from overfueling/ poor spray pattern etc, you also produce deposits inside the precombustion chamber/ combustion chamber/ piston crown etc.
At least thats my understanding of it.
You can clean up the chamber and piston by spraying a fine mist of water ACROSS the inlet manifold, and letting the air flow suck in the mist whilst at say 1500rpm.
The added water will help in cleaning out the combustion chambers.
Do a search, I think this topic has been brought up several times before.

Water injection is nothing new, in a petrol the comprssion is far lower, and thus there is more room at the top of the compression stroke for any excess water that may be in the combustion chamber.
This luxury is not available in a diesel motor.
So thus I said spray a fine mist, ACROSS the inlet, incase the nozzle of the spray bottle pops off, or you accidentally get a firm stream instead of a spray, there is less likelyhood of damage to the motor.
If you feel you need to do this, then do it just before an oil change, as the water will get past the rings, and accumulate in the sump oil.
General driving, with correctly set pump and injectors will eventually clean out the combustion chambers, but it will take a little longer.
I would not do it to my vehicle, as I dont see the need, i have done it on many others, the majority pertrol motors that were heavily carboned up from poor driving, poor maintainence, poor engine condition, and they were running on when stopped, due to hot spots in the combustion chamber.
Again, a handy bit of advice, and knowledge to know, but if you look after your vehicle, you shouldnt need to do it.
some good info on water injection can be found here.
