Transfer case input flange removal. HELP!
Transfer case input flange removal. HELP!
Started stripping down the transfer case to put gears in it, I got the output flanges off without too much trouble. But the input flange nut will NOT move,
I tried putting the case back in the car and reconnecting drive shafts then trying to undo it.
I tried heating it.
I tried putting the flange in a vice and beating the crap out of my ratchet with a hammer.
I tried using a 1.5M breaker bar on it.
I tried putting a screwdriver through one of the flange bolt holes and locking it against the TC, and bent then broke the screwdriver (snap on )
I took the front section off the TC, put a vice clamp type tool on the inside off the input shaft, and beating the crap out of the bloody thing..........
I ground off the locking tags (incase they were deeper than normal and were still locked further down the shaft)
And I tried a few other combinations of the above
Cookie of a thing hasn't move a millimeter.
Has anyone got any other ideas on how I can get the flange nut off.
Only other things I can think of is a impact gun(I dont have one), or a stick of dynamite.

i know you pain also.
i spent 2 hours once trying to remove a flange nut to the point where i almost busted my hand from punching the concrete when the breaker bar slipped off the nut. then a week lateri removed the other 2 with a rattle gun in less than a minute each. It does help for it to be still in the car if not using a rattle gun. Other prob i had was the flange was rusted onto the shaft. so i then had to use a bigger mallet.

Anyone used those electric rattle guns ? I don't think the ones with 1/4 " drive would be of any use, but have never used one.
Have seen others with 1/2" drive and think would be useful. don't really have the room for a decent compressor.

I don;t think a 1/4 drive one would be much good - the impact effect would bust anything that was appropriate to drive ith 1/4 - max about 13mm.
The 1/2 drive ones are pretty good - but to get a quality one they are serious $$$ - more than a reasonable compressor and cheap rattle gun for sure.
Steve.
