So, I want to find a rover guy to do some dirty rover things to my rover engine. I figure I've saved some $$ by fitting up the EFI myself and getting it running okay, so now I don't mind paying someone to get it sweet.
Someone who can check the stuff that is really beyond my means to check, like am I getting adequate fuel pressure in the rail at all rev levels, how far off is my mixture, and just general tune up stuff.
The engine is a mix of rangie and disco parts so I just want someone who's worked on plenty of those motors. Any recommendation around Boronia/Bayswater in Vic?

I've heard nothing but good stuff about this place, but I have to admit he didn't seem mad keen to have to work on an old triumph, must be used to having more room to move in the engine bay

As with an MG it's a light car with a fair amount of engine, the engine was supposedly built for another car for Targa Tasmania, as a 4.2 litre stroker, then the buyer fell through so the guy who owned my stag got the engine cheap. It's really a handful actually, especially when you're used to an old Patrol.
It's a definite fixer-upper as far as the paint goes, but everything else is really quite good, especially for the price. I've tidied the engine bay up a lot since these photos were taken, need to take some more pics when I get the car back I think.

Yep, I agree and I am thinking megasquirt down the track... but for now it is good to have been able to bolt EFI on with minimal tinkering. Plus the plenum, fuel rails etc all had to go on anyway. economical is a strong word for a v8 but yes if you have it tuned for balls then no but if you get it tuned for a good balance then yes it can be. and most efi systems have what they call 'closed loop' which basically means the computer uses and exhaust sensor, air temp sensor to determine the best way to keep the air fuel mixture at 14:1 which in theory would make it economical.
Put it this way i have 35" simex on my rangie with 4:11 diffs and an auto i have got from 120 km to 450 km out of 80L now the 120 km day was on/off type throttle spinning wheels on a hard track and the 400 km was a lot of hwy and pretty easy tracks taking it real easy on the gas. Now if i bolt the 33" road tyres on i have got close to 500 km on road only driving. So it all depends on how you drive it and have it tuned. I would dare say in a road car being much lighter an all you could aim for some decent figures if you drove like a 'normal' person.

TD5 96 Discovery UTE.
Just picked the Stag up from Glenn at Rover Land. He gave it a good service and tune up and it is running very well now.
I actually wanted him to check all the hoses etc to confirm I'd made no mistakes when fitting the EFI stuff, which he did, but as it turned out it was all correct. Just needed a good tune up.
Anyway, I will just add to the good rap for anyone looking for a Rover mechanic.

I had a wolf 3d ver 3 on my old rangie 3.9 and couldnt recommend them highly enough. Easy to tune. Easy to fit and they will transform a rover V8. Im running a dunnydore dizzy (cheap easy parts). I've almost finished installing the 4.6 into my 93 and fitting the wolf into that....cant wait to crank it up...

Megasquirt kit currently runs about $270AUD delivered for an MS1 V3.0.
My opinion, there is nowhere near $1600 of extra value in a Wolf. I'm not going to waste anyones time arguing point for point, all I'll say is my 4.6 is currently doing low 18litres per 100km on highway run (with a vacuum advance that doesn't work, and an unmodified dizzy curve), and still has plenty of room for improvement. I think 16l/100 on the highway and well under 20 on city run should be well within reach, and I'm not tuning it for economy.

84 Rangie, 3 inch spring lift, 2 inch body, Megasquirted 4.6, R380, rear Maxi, 34x11.5 JT2s. Simex FM installed.
The versions shown on the webpage are the latest you DONT need that version. Hunt a around for a cheaper 2nd hand ver 3.2/3.2 it has all the functionality a rover engine needs including program advance curve (hello big torque gains) and outputs for thermo fans and oxy sensors/idle control. It even has idle up for aircon (a handy thing to have if you have a big winch that draws current!)
I wouldn't pay anymore than 300 for the unit maybe 400 if the loom was in good nick.
The installation is pretty straight forward. I did my 1st one at 19 and it took me 3 days. A half decent auto spark would knock it over in a day...
Nothing against the megasquirt i just have more experience with the Wolf.
