Triton 2.5TD Overheating

I have a 94 2.5TD Triton Dual Cab that has only done 80K. Other than being a bit slow it is a good truck but is prone to overheating when towing on the highway or when doing heavy 4wd work - other wise temps stay normal. The radiator is in good condition as is the rest of the cooling system. It would appear to be a design issue with poor airflow through the radiator and A/C (neither is blocked) and the air seems to have trouble leaving the engine bay. When the engine is hot and idling is stays hot but as soon as the bonnet is lifted temp drops straight away.

Anyone else had this problem and what have you done about it? As I know the standard system is OK I was considering a four or five core triple flow radiator as the standard is very thin and a couple of addional electric fans. Any other ideas - vents in the bonnet would help but the hot air will just get sucked into cabin ventilation system.

They tend to have very good cooling whihc makes suspicion that all is not well, such as the fan not working or the inside of the radiator blocked up.
There was quite a big thread about this just recently with a triton getting hot, try doing a search and good luck.

Thanks for that - found the threads you were talking about - he had a radiator and thermostat problem and though it is not clear - a new radiator etc doesn't seem to have fixed his problems though he says it was 90% better. In my car the thermostat and the radiator are all in top nick and they have all been checked a few times.

Contrary to comments - based on personal experience and some of the other threads it would seem that the Triton cooling system is fine for normal use but on hot days in hard going is a bit marginal - the standard radiator is very thin on of the thinest I have seen.

i think a thicker, bigger radiator may do the trick as well as looking at how to suck air out of the engine bay might help.

Fit longer bonnet bolts with spacers to lift the rear of the bonnet for a test run, this will show up the insufficent hot airflow problem
