OME vs. Dobinson

Hmmm, I'm hearing a lot of Dobi fans. Only thing is, they don't offer a warranty here, but OME does, so I think, based on that, I'll go for the OMEs. I'm not going for the lift; I'm only getting shocks and a steering s'lizer.

You will find if you do springs and shocks your ride will be improved vastly over standard as they are better mached.

sorry off topic,

im tossing up between pro comp shocks and dobinson shocks.

what are peoples oppinions on the two?

(to go in gq wagon with 5" dobinson coils, plus the other usual shit)

best suspension for what reason? What do you mean by better? Better wheel travel or better ride quality or better load carrying or better price? How about spelling out what you want from a suspension, what sort of driving, budget etc.

i have used both. My GQ had Dobinsons 3" kit and it gave it nice travel and good comfort levels when loaded with a few bits and pieces but once fully loaded with 2 people and all my camping gear the ride got worse. Also when it was just me in it it was a bit choppy at times.

My GU has OME 2" lift and this has proven to be the best compromise I reckon. Wheel travel isn't as much but ride quality and load carrying is much better I reckon

DONT DO IT....... i bought a set of 4'' extra extra heavy duty dobinson springs off maquarie4x4 and they collapsed 75mm in 5 months (that was AFTER the inital settling period) when i complained all i got was the run around.... No warranty-not even a returned phone call. (i still have the receipt full of dart holes )
Any way enough winging..

When I first brought my SWB GQ I had OME 40mm springs fitted with Koni Shocks. This handled fantastically. Did about about 150 000km on the coils and am at 240 000km on the Front koni's. Rears got broke throw owner error.
Oh and those front koni's still work alright.

I agree 100%! Mine sagged 4" in one night nav unevenly too.

I would not fit them if they were given to me. Also the black chips to blue underneath so I wonder who actually makes them.

Just Got backing from KING Springs so i will let you know how they go. they are using a newer higher spec steel. They are lighter too as the wire is thinner diameter reducing unsprung weight. Putting a lot of faith in them fitting them last Saturday and racing obc next week!

Ive had 2 sets of dobinsons and done 200 000+ on each and didnt sag.

I recon most problems with any brand of springs are the wrong rates have been selected/supplied

You cant expect a constant 150 to do the same job as a softer rate spring and last.

Just a point of note my dobinsons are blue not black yet the OME were black and yellow underneath

I agree with bru21 i have 3" lift they are uneven and sagged and the front springs bind. I went back to lovels no problem

Dobinsons off the shelf springs are aqua, Lovells and the old National Springs are blue. Dobinsons powdercoat their 'specials' (some 3" and all 4"-6") black unless otherwise requested. Some previous Dobinsons distributors are still selling black high lifted springs but not making it clear that the manufacture is now Lovells.

We sell and fit many 3"-6" springs, and were caught ourselves initially as they often don't sag straight away. First up we were replacing them with the same thing, but soon got tired of this. It was also affecting our reputation. I have since ordered springs directly from Dobinsons and replaced these Customers springs. I will get no credit back for the Lovells springs - but it keeps my customers happy.

Dobinsons springs are labeled C96-????, or C95-???? for their 'specials'. They are labelled C45-????, or C59-???, or C21-??? etc. for their 'off the shelf' coils. Lovels are labelled NF-R3 (for the GQ/U front Raised 3" springs) or similar coding. These are stickers wrapped around a coil so the stickers don't last long once the springs have been fitted. We have only had one or two problems with the Lovells 2" and 'off the shelf' 3" springs. We've had many problems with the Lovells 'specials'.

Normy Walters ran Dobinsons springs with-out any problems for some time - until obtaining EFS sponsorship - and he drives his ute pretty hard.

I am always on the look-out for better product for our Customers and I have heard that Kings are utilising a higher spec steel and I'm keen to see how their new product performs.

Bru21 - please let me know how they go in the OBC. This material is not new - it is similar to what Landrover have been using for many years - GO THE LANDY !!

EFS aren't cheap & nasty.

EFS coils, like so many other well known brands (with 3 letter names), are made in the South East corner of Queensland.

I have 6 year old dobinson 6" coils n they still sit up nicely, I pulled them out n fitted 7" kings n 2 weeks later these dropped from 45 mm higher then the dobbo's to 15 mm higher. When the EFS 6" came out I measured them to find they where the same wire size n amount of coils as the dobbo"s. I was not awear of the lovell swap goin on but can agree that the new dobbo's I fitted were not as good as the old ones, but they may have supplied the lovells

Bought a set of dobinson springs 6 years ago 5" still going strong blue in colour for family wagon. But in past 18 months have had to replace 2 sets of front ones in comp car due to saging also got no replies from the big shop in sydney and I tell every one about there poor sevice. I had universal springs fitted a while back on my GQ and they were crap, the whole rear end would sag with a decent load in the back, I also had Rancho 5000 shocks in.
I have just had OME springs and shocks fitted with a 2" lift. So far these are fantastic.
Good warrenty as well, and they check everything after 500 kms.
