2H charging issue

2H charging issue
Guys my old man has an issue with either the reg or alt on his 2H, i have no idea where to start looking
Is there away i can test it apart from the multimeter watching the volts at the battery
I started the car, tested at 12.59, pulled the plug from the alt and that should have dropped the volts to below or 12, but nothing changed, so i supect reg, but not sure how it works
Any help would be great

Nah, that is not the test I would use.
The test I usually go by is, hook your multimeter to the battery with the engine off, check voltage. Start the car and give it some stick, see if the voltage climbs or not.
If the voltage stays at the just-over-12 mark, then the alternator's not doing anything. If the alternator's working, voltage should really jump up over 13.5V, at least when you are revving a bit above idle.
That doesn't mean it's the regulator though, it could be dirty, worn brushes, worn commutator, or a more fundamental problem.

12.59 is a good voltage for a fully charged lead acid battery, so either your multimeter is way out, or your battery is getting some charge some time.
With engine running, you should see closer to 14V at the battery. Where were you measuring when you disconnected the alternator - at the battery, or at the alternator?
Do you have a charge light on you dash? Does it work?
When you started the engine, did you give it a good rev? Depending on the fault, you may need more revs at the alternator before it starts to charge.
Slightly off-topic: As a general rule, it's not a good idea to disconnect alternator wires while the engine is running. For someone who knows what they're doing (not me) some wires can be disconnected. On some cars, disconnect the wrong wire at the wrong time, and it can get expensive - all sorts of electronic things can be damaged.

including death if you grab the wrong wire. Altenator can produce alot of voltage when its not tied to a regulator and battery. Plenty enuf to kill.-Scott- wrote:

Ok just to clear the air, im a HV sparky, i can take what it gives, i am also an auto elec

Now what i should have said at the start, i tried laymans 1st, i have a reg issue, the alt is 3 pin out and the regis the 6 wire sort, it was replaced with a solid state reg 12 months ago, i need the pin out of the alt and reg so i can CORRECTLY test what needs to be tested.
My issue is have no record of the controls of a 2H solid state retifier and it pin out
So thats the story and i hope this clear a few things up, i am hoping someone has the Baxter or similar pics of there or other regs as i dont have access to any of them anymore

All cool. My post wasn't intended as a dig at anyone in particular, more a note for anybody else who may come along. The rest of your post is way too advanced for me...
it take it to a local lecie shop and get it tested. i work in the same industrie. i would like a altanator to run on 13v on idle. how much more does it rise wen revving the car. 12.59 is still ok but another problem could be the charge wires stuffed.its just happend in our patrol.so i rebuilt it and now the charge wires stuffed
