Drilling leaf springs

ive discovered that i have bent a front spring somehow (RUF) and will be making a new set for the RUF. Now i want to incorporate a military wrap 2nd spring but will need to drill a new locating hole in it to match the rear leaf spacing.

What drill bits will i need to drill through the hardened leaf?

drilled heaps with a normall sutton HSS bit, plenty of lube and a $99 drill press on its slowest speed

Remember in this case SPEED is your enemy Speed = Heat heat stuffs the drill bit .

Just a question on drilling leaf springs.

I've had people swear blind that you should never do it, but obviously a few people have with no apparent ill effects. Can anybody provide a definitive answer on this?

i,ve had all 4 main leaves drilled (front & rear)
have not had any probs yet !!
ie....no cracks or bends !!! :D

Keep the bit lubed up as well .. I have found that ATF works quite well as a cuttling lubricant (was put onto it by a machine shop)

The oldman, he's a toolmaker, siad to use masonary drill (cardide tip) for a pilot hole the open it up with standard drills
Slow speed and plenty of lube as state earlier

He said it sounds dodgey but it works and its cheaper than buying 'special drill bits'

how slow is slow?
500rpm?

Yeah about that wouldnt do anything over 800 proberly needs to be lower than 800 mind you
