Aftermarket ECU options with A442F

Post by physh »

Hi all,

I have a 2002 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ105 with the 1FZ-FE motor and the A442F electronic-overdrive 4-speed auto transmission.

From the factory, the 100 series 1FZ-FE does not have the capability to use an O2 sensor.
It does not even have the wiring for the O2 sensor!!

Anyhow, I want to replace or augment the factory ECU with one that is laptop-controllable by myself (so the Unichip is out) and that can do the following:

1. Allow the automatic transmission to still do its thing
2. Accept signals from sensors (primarily O2/lambda sensor, but also eventually boost and temperature etc)
3. Allow multiple fuel maps to be run, switchable or re-loadable with relative ease.

The reasons behind doing so:
1. Fuel economy
2. Monitoring of engine vitals
3. Knowledge

Now I've started to look around for this sort of thing, but I've hit a dead end and I don't know where to look next.

I currently have a Unichip (which I can't modify myself), but it only modifies the existing signals coming out of the factory ECU - the fact I have no O2 sensor means it does not do the whole Open/Closed loop lean-cruise thing that makes highway cruising good and efficient.

So my question is... What can I do to replace the factory ECU with something I can control, put sensors etc in to monitor everything, given that I have the automatic transmission?

How do people who do engine conversions to a diesel for instance do it?

Would it be maybe possible to leave the factory ECU to do the transmission etc, and just have a different ECU for the engine operations?

Cheers
Nick

Mine is a 96 1FZFE 4 speed eclectronic auto, exactly the same execpt your runs coil packs and mine is eclectronic dizzy

I used a Haltech unit. It is an interceptor that is between the motor and ECU. It only feeds of the wires for engine operation only and does not effect the operation of the auto. I can't comment on the Unichip, however I reckon both are ok, but have different limitations on parameters. Unichip has dual mapping as well. Mostly it depends on who tunes it. You'd be surprised over the difference performance of the same unit in different hands

I don't understand why you are concerned about putting an O2 sensor in though?

Cheers Greg
