I'm thinking about buying this rocky over ebay,

anyone have any initial concerns i should consider? im new to 4x4ing. A friend of mine is flying to sydney this weekend to check it out for me as im from hobart. Any advice is welcome!

I voted no. Its a 2L Petrol, which from talking to owners at the servo i work at, is reasonably gutless. If the price is right, then sure, hit it up.

But see if you can get a 2.8TD for your own enjoyment.

Otherwise it looks okay.

Rocky's are a great 1st 4x4, but the general consensus with petrol ones is crap. Gutless, and no where near as tough and hard wearing as the diesel donk.

The only positive is IIRC a Toyota petrol motor of a similar year (22r comes to mind) bolts up nicely in place of the Rocky engine. But if your going to go to that much trouble you may as well swap boxes too.

Also, you won't get difflocks for a Rocky. But that wouldn't stop me buying one again if I had my time over. (I still want to upgrade now though

)

For $1500 youve got yourself a cheap 4x4, I have a 2litre Rocky and although it is gutless, i can still keep up with the big boys off road. Mines on gas so fuel costs are negligible and for under 5 grand its a relatively unbreakable little car. Parts are cheap because the engine is a 3y toyota which is fitted to early model Hi Luxes and hi aces vans.

Maybe the price, but not in great nick, unless your lucky. I grabbed mine for 2k a few years ago and apart from the gearbox needing new synchro's it was in great condition.

I sold my old 85 F75 td rocky for $3,600.00 a few years ago. Was worth more but needed a quick sale.

at his sierra comment. Obviously not the sharpest tool round. A sierra's legal towing weight is 450KG, so towing a bike trailer and bikes around is illegal anyway

And offroad, i know which one i would take. The rust in the doors is also a rego fail as well. TOOL.

448 000kms is very high for a car that old. the only explanation i could make is that wynyard (where it is) is reasonably remote area of tas, so the k's its done would be long distance and not too hard, such as city driving. but thats only a guess. I'm thinking of looking for a turbo diesel version of a rocky as from what i have found out from some of my friends that go off roading, are a somewhat better car. if not more expensive. Is a rocky a good place to start from? i wont be off roading in it all the time as im a uni student and i would be using it to get about town (hobart) so it would help if its reasonably effcient on fuel.

It's only averaged about 20,000km per year. I know there are plenty of cars around of that vintage with a lot less km's on them, but 400 odd isn't high if it's been registered and used on a regular basis it's entire life.

I am in the exact same boat as you mate, and I could not be happier with the deicsion i made to buy my Rocky.
Offroad it goes very well and on road handling/performance is good for a 4x4.
The only issue is with upgraded 4x4 modifications, but its no big deal unless you're into 4x4ing pretty hardcore.
To drive round town and go on the beach/bush every couple of weekends there is not much better of a car to buy.

hotfourok, thats for your input cobba, stop on what i was looking for. so your saying that the only problem with rocky's is that its a bit of a problem to upgrade it with off road mods? that doesn't really bother me at this stage, as im not really hardcore into 4x4ing. But is it worth my while to wait around till a turbo diesel comes onto the market?

Deffinatley get the T/D. Plenty of power, good off-road and on-road, and pretty economical. Some parts are a bit harder to find for it, and a bit more $$ than average. But overall its a good little unit, plenty tough.
