Thai OBC Sierra(s?)

Post by Gwagensteve »

I've been having a look at the OBC site/photos and that Thai sierra looks like the business.

I'm not buying in to its eligability, if it should/shouldn't have won, who was helping them when winching etc and actually don't really care much about the OBC, but I would like to know more about the car.

Does anyone have any tech on it?

Steve.

From reading the OBC thread it apparently had no firewall and a turbo a couple inches from the navi's feet.

Incidentally, any real tech on them would be sweet. Going from the photos on the obc website it certainly has width.

if those zooks were ccda compliant they would really give the big boys a run for there money in the vic events, there winch will slaughter people.

I always wanted to enter the OBC in my Zuk. Strengthen the diffs, put some 35 x 15 Swampers or the like on to float over the sand and mud. A supercharged 1.6 auto with f&R lockers and a super fast winch. I reckon you could nail quite a few stage wins, you'd loose out on any straight speed stage I reckon but as long as your navigation skills were good and you could keep the car together I reckon it would be a good combo

I found the photos i was looking for. The winch is nicknamed gods winch overseas particularly maylasia. From my understanding they are often a small car diff pumkin welded up, with an axle out of one side connected to a drum. With diff ratios being around a 4:1 ratio they are incredibly fast. If you know what you are doing you can get your wheels to spin at the same speed as the winch

The good old god winch, there are a few guys on pirate with them. they reakon you can tear a car in half with one. Ive heard off guys using Datto 180b diffs, just machining one of the axles to suit. you run it off a pto.

For a couple of bucks, a bit more checkerplate and no bastard can complain! its clearly a good set up and i bet all the bigger boys will be trying to get different winches now!
And all the dash instrumenst and air intake up high is was perfect for the the conditions.
I always find it funny, zooks are always up against bigger and more powerful rigs every comp, rarely winning! But do they complain? No, but as soon as a zook is winning or up there its waaaa waaa waaa! get over it!

I wonder what the legalities are of plating your floor plan with alloy plate rego wise. Easy solution for a rusty floorpan...

Anyone know or done something similar?

Yes its a turbo to the left , and the thing on the right is a starter motor,

mounted top side on the bell housing , leading me to some thoughts it maybe a transaxle .

(just musing myself)

By the small amount of running gear i can see .

Either a front wheel drive motor box placed north south with transaxle shafts running derectly to the diffs , or the foward facing shaft running the winch , rear shaft to a reversed ratio transfer case (high range giving 1 somthing to 2 and low 1-1 this is to reverse the ratio of the transaxle so as to give a resonable top speed in high range ) would still = 4 odd to 1 low range ;)

The starter if that is what it is looks directley on top of the box at the Rear of the block not on the side .

Motors with starter setup like that are useually transaxle
just about all types suz ,toy , dat , mit, ect
and honda which if used in this way would have the output on the other side ( hondas rotate in a different direction )

variations even subaru although in this case the would use rear out put to a transfer, i think this would be to long a setup in this case as the motor is well back.

Just some thoughts ;)

we thought about biulding a zook with a transaxle setup , so as to delete the wieght of the transfer.Yu can get the engine and box in there
but you really need the diff pushed foward and the fire wall punched back to get enough distance for a front shaft of usable length .

it could be a transaxle set up ....
(bear with me)
run it in nth-sth config. with the drives still out the sides , then run drives from them !!
1 drive to the transfer case , the other drive (both with disconnects) to the winch !!
this would accomidate the diff offsets !!
therefore , disconnect winch & drive , disconnect drive & run the winch .........
5th gear full noise on the winch !!!!!!!   :D

Heres how the army does 6x6 Landrovers
Just to give you an idea on how one works, same principle
Drive to the third axle is by a separate propeller shaft taking power from the transfer-case power take-off (PTO). This PTO takes drive from a gear on the transfer case intermediate shaft and rotates at the same speed as the front (1st) and rear (2nd) prop'-shafts regardless of whether hi-range or lo-range is selected. The 3rd prop'-shaft passes over the second axle and is jointed, incorporating a c.v. joint, where it does so. In this way extreme articulation of the two rear axles is possible

Being with Tuff Truck and being aware of all the CCDA stuff... Yeah, ok they won the OBC, congratulations...
But why are all the competitors forking out CCDA fees etc ,and then a vehicle that doesn't pass (correct me if I am wrong please) is allowed to even enter?

Not sour grapes... they are awesome Zooks and I'm sure they've now hatched a few ideas here... but we get hammered by the CCDA then this happens :?

I have just spent the last four hours sitting here typing a huge response to this post sharon , and Deleted it about five times.

CCDA rules are all but a guide line .

The same type of thing happens at TT every year .

First i believe in total equal opitunity , any RULE, RULING ,CLAUSE
That places any competertor at a disadvantage be it Performance or finacialie should be ammended.
Its impossible to have fair competion otherwise.

 Thats all ,

after all that i still had to edit this one

I know where you are coming from... too many 'grey' areas in every event...

It just seems there are governing bodies everywhere ready to take money, but nothing seems to be the same across the board... too confusing.
I just hate seeing one competitor hassled over a window net/roll cage/whatever in a Class ?? event... and then another not in another event of the same supposed class... :?
