arb wich bar, winch choices!

Just picked up a winch bar, and was wondering if most low mount winches fit?
Everything on the fitting instructions refers to warn, holes, bracket, wires.
And what sizes are people running?
Has anyone gone bigger than 6000lb?
I'm asking this as there isnt much choice in winches in that size.
And one more, what makes are people running?

Tabor 9k/ARB Magnum 9000lb.

Fits snugly. Pretty much its a Warn XD9000 with a slower motor. But my motor crapped itself so I put a Warn XD9000 motor on it. A little quicker it is! But its still a Low mount which is Slooow. I went a 9000lb as there is little difference in weight and dimensions between a 6000lb and the 9000lb.

I had light duty springs and have just recently bent them. I'd make sure you have heavy or at least a medium duty spring in the front to take the extra weight.

I reckon you'd struggle to find a low mount 4x4 winch that doesn't have the same bolt pattern as the warns. Any winch maker would be nuts to make a winch that didn't bolt straight into a bar made for a warn.

You would have already seen my winch bar in your search.
I made it for $100...$50 in steel. Mostly 8mm thick. $50 in powdercoat.
I have a 9500lb - 4300kg winch Its a copy of a warn..I think! It did say in the fitting instructions that the mounting points will fit a bar made for a Warn. When I looked there wasn't an off the shelf bar available to handle a 9500lb'er on a Suzi with a 3 inch body lift. I have since refitted the original bumper over the top with a hole so just the fairlead sticks out.

have u fitted it yet?

if not could i get some pics of the bar please, mostly of the mounts if different to a non winch and the mounts for the winch.

i have a non-winch arb and always thinging bout a winch.

Have a Warn M8000 on an ARB winch bar.
Fitted up fine.
Same weight as the M6000.

Not fitted yet, the mounts would be the same. i'll take pics of it. the guy i bought it off had trimmed the 2 outer brackets coz he had 33's on.

Here is a pic by 'CHOPS1' that shows typical mount setup. Be sure to use crush tubes in the chassis.

if u look at my thread i have already got the bar and mounted it for the 2" BL with basically extended chassis rail with crush tubes welded in.

I'd be a bit concerned with the chopped brackets. Why would they have been chopped as I reckon it would compromise the strength of the bar and mounting especially when winching. They were there for a reason

u will find a 6000 has a very quick line speed, mine fairly moves along, plus its heaps for a zook.

If you remove the side brackets (or cut them down as per the photo) you WILL winch the car off the front of the car.

Modifying a bar to suit a BL is easy to do badly but difficult to do well as there is very little strength in the end of the sierra chassis (which is why ARB picked up the bumper bracket outriggers in the first place.

Some strength will need to be added to the chassis, so there will be welding involved, and some careful design.

PS an 8k or 9k winch is IMHO too much for a zuk - a 6K is faster then either up to 6k which is what 90% of suzuki recovery is.

From memory, a 6K winch was actually faster through a snatch block at a theoretical 12K than a warn 12K winch on a single line pull (go figure!)

Greg and Mugginsmoo's 6000's have always been enough winch for the job.

Hey Steve,

Sorry for thread hacking but as per below pic where i have modded the bar to suit the BL, i dont have the outriggers as the 31s would be munched if not.
Can u mod the bar with supports going behind the centre bar for strength?

Sorry to continue the 'thread hack'.

I'm currently building a front bar for my Sierra, and was considering designing for later addition of a winch. I have decided against so becasue of cost vs usage, and the requirmeents for electical upgrades.

Anyway I still want my bar connected well to the front of my car, as the bar has built in recovery points. My chassis tubes will be choped for various reasons, and hence new bracketing needed devicing. I'm going with chose four little pee-wee chassis holes for locaters, but real strength will cames from clamping to around the front chassis tube.

The clamps will be put about 30mm inwards of the chassis rails, and the clamps are in effect a 12mm metric threaded spring U-bolt (new, not re-used) which is clamped on using the con-rod end caps off of a Toyota 2L (2.4L Diesel engine). So the chassis can take this strain, 2 pieces of 40x10mm steel flat will be rammed inside the front tube, and probably tacked at each end.

Although this hasn't been designed for a winch, I belive that this is strong enough to take the strain should a winch be retrofitted later. I've just said this, becasue a few guys seem to be questioning strength of bar hook-ups, and maybe this could be of use to someone. BTW, its not finished yet, but if you want pics of the hook-up, that bits built; and I can email them to you if you want.

Mine is, like most things I do, over-engineered. But I'm not worried about it breaking OR tearing off. :lol:

I'll be welding new outer brackets on,well polarbear will be but he doesnt know it yet :D
The guy who had it, didnt put a winch on! in fact he didnt have it on the car long at all.

A good way to make the mounts stronger is to slide (or bash) a lump of thick steam pipe through the centre of the round tube that runs through the front chassie rails. If you fish plate the chassie rails and weld them to that pipe it becomes quite strong.

I had a XD9000 winch in my old zook in a ARB bar, and with the back of my zook chained to a tree, i used to pull cruisers/patrols up hills and through mud using snatch blocks and the bar wouldnt move.

Stuffed if i know where my old zook is now though.......
