3Sgte Questions
I want to mate a 3Sgte to a hilux box ie g52 or bundera turbo diesel box in traditional north south mounting.
I would even consider another box (factory, supra, maybe last resort an auto to mate to the bundera - landcrusier split transfer.
So are there any suitable bellhousings - I wish the thai guys spoke better english. I would rather use factory belhousings etc for reliability and ease of fitment.
Also I am chasing a generation 3 3sgte from a celica gt4. How do I tell by looking at the motor if its a gen 1,2 or 3. I have found on with an x3 sticker at the top near the yamaha logo.
So I am chasing the following parts too if I can get them cheap:
gen 3 gt4 3sgte (pref front cut)
bellhousing to suit hilux box
hilux or bundera box, bundera transfer with pto output. Also chasing landrcusier 2wd to 4wd lever to replace bundera vacuum solinoid.
Cheers all

1969 FJ40, status: Rebuilding has now started
I had a good look under the Thai guys zook and their bellhousings where not a factory jobby, they had cut and shut two bellhousings and welded them together (amazing thing was they mated up pretty good (ie no spacer plate or infill piece so must have been very similar belhousings)
Speaking with the guys in very broken car speak, they used prado gearboxes with cruiser transfers.
The motors are the same as the GT4 but out of a wagon (can't remeber the model name) which has the groupA spec motors - their motors where not stock though, had aftermarket pistons, fuel injection, computers, etc!!!
hope this helps.

OK,
To mate the motor up to a G52 g/box you will need a bellhousing from a SA63 Celica, which had a 2S motor in it. The flywheel and clutch from the 2S may bolt to the 3SG, but im not 100% on this, the only thing being different would be the amount of flywheel bolts. there is no bellhousing available to bolt it to a R series box. The Gen 3 3SGTE came from a ST205 GT4, the last of the SW20 MR2's, and the late Caldina wagons. You may find these motors pretty bloody hard to find. The only mod needed to make these motors support desent HP, is to upgrade to a head stud kit, from the original bolt setup. Have seen one making 240kw @ all 4 wheels, with the right management, turbo, etc, and the head stud kit being the ONLY mod to the motor itself.

i went for a run in a late model MR2 on friday night, it had one of these motors in it, with a few TRD parts and turbo modifications, HOLY FARK!!!!!
I've been in some quick cars before but this one really haulled ass!
Now i see why everyone was raving about the zooks at Outback.
Might be a good motor for a buggy too
Seemed to boost up almost from idle.

well at least its not too strange an idea. one jap importer would not even quote me on a wreck he has as "too hard to fit la da da". Can't see why it would be any harder than fitting the chev to the patrol. I know the toyota's are a snack to wire up etc.
yes I may just be making a god winch.
This will be an absolute secret project as I want it to be different in 08. Lets just say not a sierra, and a fresh front diff idea!
This will cross between trophy truck and challenge class truck.
No mild steel will be used
Aiming at 1200kg complete!
Added up over 7k of fox / king components alone!
cheers all bru

just noticed that Dave Metcalfe isn't allowing the god winches in his comps in QLD so might be worth checking the other comp organisers to ensure they will be legal to use before building one. Also be very interested to see what you come up with for the new rig going by the shopping list so far

im sure they will ban the 'god winch' in future events cause mega unfair advantage obviously. cause if ccda give green light for them then everyone one will have to have one. so BRU21, ask the relevant bodies like CCDA , MMM for eg if you can compette with one of these against himount electrics. you may be waisting your time if you plan to compette with this setup. i compette aswell and if i can run one then ill have to join you in making one similar. i feel that it'll be one in all in to run one , but more like all out. as the pic of the inside of one with the motor moved back , is running a transaxle , i doubt there would be enough length on this one to be a
siamesed prado box with a cruiser case unless he has a six inch tail shaft
for the rear output

obviously it is an unfair advantage. I mean how on earth is it fair that someone can make a winch that is not based on a warn highmount!!! And to make it faster than a warn highmount and cheaper than modifying a warn highmount as well! Totally unfair! Bring back the old days when the outback challenge was sponsored by warn and every entrant had to use a warn winch. Fair dinkum some things just aint fair at all.im sure they will ban the 'god winch' in future events cause mega unfair advantage obviously. cause if ccda give green light for them then everyone one will have to have one.
and Bru21, if ya wanna make an absolutely secret project dont go posting about it on the internet! Doh!

There is no reason to ban the winch on its performance. TO do so would be bad sportsmanship. Same could be said on the fact your winch has been modded. Some could say what you have done by putting dual 6hp motors running 24v to be unfair. Then throw in the freespool + drum modds. Thats a fair performance upgrade compared to a Himount straight out of the box.
The only reason I can see for this winch to be banned. Would be the fact that it dosen't have an automatic brake. In the mud that generally isnt a problem. But on a hill climb that is bad.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Both cars were running the same motors, sitting way back (hence the firewall mods, one car had an alloy firewall protecting the navs feet from the turbo but both had the motors in the same positions(roughly).
The transfers had the front and rear tailshafts offset to the drivers side and the PTO driveshaft came straight out of the back of the transfer at the top.
Man I wish I took photos while i was under there.

that seems to be the reason stated by Dave Metcalfe in the comps section. My interpretation (also being a noob) is that a God's winch is PTO powered, yeah? Hence much more-ly adjustable speed-wise. Is this correct, or have a picked up a dud somewhere?

Is the only reason the "god Winches" are deemed unsafe due to the lack of an automatic braking system?
The thai zooks didn't apear to have a small diff housing as part of their winches (wish I had a better look now) so I wonder if there is another option or setup to the backyard diffhousing method?
How do the old landcruiser PTO winches work? do they have a brake mechanism??
Cheers

Most other PTO systems use a worm drive to turn the winch drum. Just in the design of a worm drive it brakes the drum. So no separate brake. As a gear cannot drive a worm drive directly. But a worm drive can turn a gear.leehamescort wrote:Is the only reason the "god Winches" are deemed unsafe due to the lack of an automatic braking system?

didnt read the whole thread but have you had a search on toymods? the old forums is a good idea to search through aswell. the 3sgte is not an easy motor to turn north south as it lacks provision for an engine mount on one side, and peope get a bit trippy about tapping holes in blocks. go for gold, but id go a 1j. i have a 1g, its a fun motor but tough to get parts for and the 1j or 2j would provide much more torque and an easier aftermarket range to play with.
