Is there any visual way of telling what ratio a diff ctr is with it out of the housing?

big flange - 3.7
small flange 3.9

Or jack up one wheel, turn the pinion flange one turn, if the wheel turns 7.8 times it is a 3.9, if it turns 7.4 its a 3.7

don't have any other ideas.

Experience is something you don't get, until just after you need it.
