my alt siezed up on me today. i was wondering if any has pulled one apart. i tought about giving it a ago as today is geelong cup and nothing is open. im pretty sure its a bearing as the vac pump still works. or has anybody got one for sale.

Not much to them. If it comes apart OK. Sometimes if a bearing seizes the outer race can spin in the housing, stuffing it.
If it comes apart ok check to see if the rotor has been hitting the stator (poleing) or if these haven't come apart. What vehicle is it off??

yeah that's true for some models - some externally regulated alternators use a brush carrier that is held into the back of the alt body with 2 screws. some internal electronically regulated alternators (bosch, lucas) have the brushes installed in the regulator 'black box' which also is held into the back of the alternator with 2 screws. you can buy a new regulator assembly with brushes installed for about $40 - $50, but the brushes are only about $5/pair, and the soldering only takes 20 seconds plus the time it takes the soldering iron to warm up :) the later nippon denso electronically regulated alternators have a cute little brush carrier buried deep inside the guts, could probably get a brush carrier assembly with brushes for not heaps.
