3 batteries

Post by muddymav »

he all i am curently changing the setup in the mav, i have 2 batteries in atm, but want to change to 3 (2 winch ,1 start)
i have a couple of options as both of my batteries are stuffed atm.
was thinking 2 optima PC1700 for the winch
and a lead acid battery for starting
or would i be better running 3 calcium batteries in parrallel
i just have a question in running batteries in parrallel
batteries in parralel is ok when they work, but if 1 battery was to short out or drop a cell, the alternator would be pouring the power into the shorted battery, leaving the other 2 to go flat or with limited charge, i was thinking an isolator of some sort but didnt know about the isolator holding the capacity of 2 winching batteries and 1 start.

also i have just fitted another alt in place of the orig, and moved the orig to were the a/c was efectivly i am running 175 amps. the regulators are both at 14.3v, i was thinking of running these parallel too.
or would it be better for the the 100amp alt for the winch batteries and the orig for the starter
i do however run 4 100w roof lights. 2 100w bull bar lights and my head lights are 100/80W along with running a uhf, scanner, chart plotter,3 55w reverse lights and 2 compressors,i thought this may be a bit of a strain on 1 alt so thats the reason i was thinking about running both altornators and 3 batteries in parallel.
i am very unsure on witch way to,so what do you peeps think???
thanks in advance
Cheers Duane

why not run one alternator for the main battery and then get a bigger one for the other two batteries, that way you dont need to run issolatrors etc. instead of running the two batteries for the whinch you could get one big n150 battery

in my GQ before tuff truck i fitted a 100Amp alt, in place of the AC comp, all this winch did was run winch and some lights, the main battry was still charged by factory alt and ran rocklights only, but, only ever tested it at home, it works a treat, no worries about stalling whilw winchin and startin the truck agaon,
